AFCI offline kit - Part 2: Windows toolchain & development tools

Offline development kit for an arc-fault detection / electrical-fire prevention system (current sensor -> STM32F407 ADC+DMA -> FFT/STFT features -> quantized DNN -> trip). Target offline PC: Windows 10/11 x64, CPU-only Python training.

Contents: Windows x64 toolchain & development tools

Open-source / freely redistributable tools. ST's own installers (STM32CubeIDE, CubeMX, CubeProgrammer, ST-LINK driver, Cube AI Studio, ST Edge AI Core) are not included (myST login + ST license); see the manual-download checklist in Part 7. STM32CubeIDE already bundles its own GCC, so the tools below are the "plain toolchain" route (VS Code + CMake + GCC + OpenOCD) and a backup.

Folder File Purpose
01_ARM_GCC_toolchain/ xPack GNU Arm Embedded GCC 15.2.1 (arm-none-eabi-gcc) Compiler/linker/gdb for Cortex-M4F (-mcpu=cortex-m4 -mfpu=fpv4-sp-d16 -mfloat-abi=hard). Unzip, add bin to PATH.
02_Flash_Debug/ xPack OpenOCD 0.12.0-7, stlink-org tools 1.9.0 (st-flash, st-info), Zadig 2.9 Flash/debug the F407 through ST-LINK without CubeProgrammer. Zadig installs a WinUSB driver for the ST-LINK if ST's driver is unavailable.
03_Build_tools/ CMake 4.4.5 (msi), Ninja 1.13.2, xPack Windows Build Tools 4.4.1 (make), Git for Windows 2.56 Build CubeMX-generated Makefile/CMake projects; local version control.
04_Python/ Python 3.12.10 x64 installer Training environment. Use with the wheels in Parts 4-5. (3.12.10 is the last 3.12 release with a Windows installer.)
05_VSCode_and_extensions/ VS Code 1.144 + VSIX: Python, Pylance, debugpy, Jupyter (+renderers, cell tags, keymap, slideshow), C/C++ (win32-x64), CMake Tools, Cortex-Debug + mcu-debug helpers (memory view, RTOS views, peripheral viewer), ARM assembly, linker-script syntax Install offline: code --install-extension <file>.vsix (install debugpy and pylance before python; debug-tracker, memory-view, rtos-views, peripheral-viewer before cortex-debug).
06_Utilities/ 7-Zip 26.05, PuTTY 0.85 Extract .7z/.zip; serial terminal for UART logging of ADC data.
07_SVD_files/ STM32F407.svd, STM32F405.svd (from cmsis-svd-data) Register view in Cortex-Debug ("svdFile" in launch.json).
08_Circuit_simulation/ ngspice 47 (64-bit) SPICE simulation of the current-sensor analog front end (CT/Rogowski integrator, anti-alias filter).

Licenses: GPL (GCC, OpenOCD, Git, Zadig), BSD-3 (stlink), BSD (CMake), Apache-2.0 (Ninja), PSF (Python), MIT/Microsoft license (VS Code, extensions), LGPL (7-Zip), MIT (PuTTY), Apache-2.0 (SVD), BSD/GPL (ngspice).

Rebuilding split files

Files over 100 MB were split into *.part001, *.part002, ... pieces. After downloading the whole repo:

  • Windows: powershell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -File .\join_parts.ps1
  • Linux/macOS: bash join_parts.sh

Both scripts rebuild the files and check them against SHA256SUMS.txt.
