ProtoArt Press

Images, PDFs, video and audio made smaller, in a studio rack unit. A free, open-source macOS app. Everything runs on your Mac: nothing is uploaded and the app makes no network connections.

ProtoArt-Press-2.1.0.dmg (130 MB) · macOS 13 or newer, Apple Silicon (M1 or newer).

Open the disk image and drag ProtoArt Press onto the Applications folder beside it.

It isn't notarised yet: the first time, right-click the app and choose Open (or System Settings → Privacy & Security → Open Anyway).

What it does

• Images (JPG, PNG): finds the lowest JPEG quality that stays within a per-photo damage budget (SSIM); PNGs are repacked losslessly.
• PDF: recompresses only the pictures, sized to how large they're shown on the page; text, fonts and vector art are copied untouched.
• Video (MP4, MOV, M4V): Apple's hardware HEVC or H.264 at constant quality; optional downscale.
• Audio (WAV, AIFF, FLAC, MP3, M4A, CAF): AAC or Apple Lossless.
• Minimum saving, a Pressed folder or replace in place (originals go to the Trash), metadata options.
