Bioavailability (BA) refers to the degree and rate at which the administered drug is absorbed by the circulatory system, thereby accessing the sites of action. BA is one of the essential tools in drug development, since it must be considered when calculating dosages for non-intravenous routes of administration based on absorption. BA includes absolute bioavailability and relative bioavailability. Absolute bioavailability compares the bioavailability of the drugs in systemic circulation following non-intravenous administration and intravenous administration. Briefly, in absolute bioavailability, the standard is always intravenous administration.
