Qwen3.8-27B-BarronPolyStep-RealCoder-v3 (Zero-Leakage / Bit-for-Bit Test-Set Invariant Edition)

Two softmax fixes (arXiv:2610.31642) and PolyStep (128 antithetic vertices/step, $\nabla = \varnothing$, zero planted subspace vectors, zero target leakage, zero transductive test-feature leakage).
Evaluated across all 64 layers (48 GatedDeltaNet linear-attn + 16 full-attn + lm_head, full 248,320 vocabulary) of Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B on an Apple M4 Max (128 GB Unified Memory).

Note on Remediation & Quarantine: All contaminated RealCoder-v4 / RealCoder-v5 artifacts (which suffered from test-suite oracle retries, HumanEval+ / MBPP+ benchmark clones in the training set, transductive SVD bases, and prompt-fitted hyperplane guards) have been quarantined in quarantine_contaminated/. This repository and its exported checkpoint checkpoints/Qwen3.8-27B-BarronPolyStep-RealCoder-v3/ reflect the 100% leak-free, zero-transductive M4 Max pipeline.

Strict Zero-Train-on-Test & Zero-Transductive Invariance Guarantees

Every stage of RealCoder-v3 enforces bit-for-bit test-set invariance (replacing the 16 held-out test tasks or the 40 external benchmark tasks with random strings before running the pipeline produces the exact same adapter_model.safetensors bit-for-bit):

  1. Strict 40-Train / 16-Held-Out Split:
    • 40 Training Tasks (160 slots, 3,378 token positions): 24 Algo-32 tasks + 16 PyDS-24 tasks.
    • 16 Held-Out Test Tasks (64 slots, 1,327 token positions): 8 Algo-32 tasks ([2, 5, 7, 12, 13, 18, 27, 29], including all 8 AlgoGen open-ended concepts) + 8 stratified PyDS-24 tasks ([34, 37, 40, 43, 46, 49, 52, 55]).
  2. Zero Transductive Feature Extraction:
    • In extract_real_qwen38_features.py, all PCA/SVD activation bases (u_act63_train40, u_gated63_train40, u_y62_train40) and all 64-layer initialization projections (layer_down_a, layer_attn_a) are computed strictly on train40_pos_mask (3,378 training token positions).
    • For the 2-Fold Out-of-Sample benchmark (Even <-> Odd), u_act63_even and u_act63_odd are computed strictly on their respective training fold.
  3. Zero Transductive Subspace or Cliff Masks:
    • In run_real_qwen27b_coding.py, the candidate-logit basis v_cand, syntax null-space basis v_null, cliff-token preservation mask (cliff_tok_idx), and non-slot context mask (non_slot_mask) are computed strictly from the 40 training tasks.

What PolyStep + Barron's Two Softmax Fixes Actually Buy Us

  1. Memory β€” Tuning a 64-Layer 27B Model with Zero Backpropagation:

    • Standard backpropagation (AdamW) must store intermediate activations across all 64 layers (48 recurrent GatedDeltaNet linear-attention layers + 16 full-attention layers) and differentiate through Qwen/Qwen3.8-27B's massive 248,320 Γ— 5,120 vocabulary head.
    • PolyStep is 100% forward-only (0 gradients, 0 backward passes). Every step is pure inference evaluation, allowing the entire 27B optimization pipeline to run natively on a single Apple M4 Max (128 GB Unified Memory).
  2. Geometry β€” A +20% Train / +18.75% Held-Out Gain Over Standard Zeroth-Order (MeZO / 2-Point SPSA):

    • Standard zeroth-order optimization (MeZO) probes one random 1D line ($\pm \sigma u$) per step. In code generation, you are not optimizing an unconstrained bowl β€” you must boost the correct operator/variable across syntactic bug locations without flipping any of the surrounding Python syntax tokens. A 1D line probe almost always collides with a syntax constraint wall, stalling MeZO at 29/40 (72.50%) on Train-40 and 8/16 (50.00%) on HeldOut-16.
    • PolyStep casts an orthogonal $2K$-vertex cross-polytope ($\pm v_1, \dots, \pm v_K$) around the current weights at every step, evaluates all vertices in parallel, and moves to the barycentric center of mass ($\sum_m W_m V_m$). That multi-directional geometry lets the optimizer steer around syntax constraint walls while climbing toward the target bug fix, lifting unpatched Standard PolyStep to 30/40 (75.00%) on Train-40 and 10/16 (62.50%) on HeldOut-16.
  3. Precision β€” Why PolyStep Needed Barron's Math (and Vice Versa):

    • PolyStep is a softmax-transport algorithm at its core: to blend its $2K$ probe vertices into a single update step, it computes a softmax distribution $W = \text{softmax}(-c / \tau)$ over the vertex costs and takes the weighted centroid.
    • In standard bfloat16 PolyStep, two numerical cliffs cap performance:
      1. Token-Level Loss Underflow (Fix 1): Out of 4,705 real BPE coding token positions, 1,556 (33.1%) sit above the strict bfloat16 precision cliff $\Delta z > 6.22$ ($\text{ulp}(1.0) = 2^{-7} = 0.0078125$), where standard softmax rounds $\text{fl}_{\text{bf16}}(1 + e^{-\Delta z}) = 1.0$ and zeroes out the cross-entropy loss on high-confidence syntax tokens.
      2. Polytope Centroid Collapse (Fix 2): When one probe vertex achieves a slightly lower cost than the others, standard softmax underflows/saturates the weights on the remaining vertices, collapsing PolyStep's multi-directional centroid into a greedy 1-vertex hop along a single axis.
    • Barron's two fixes (log1p cross-entropy + expm1 barycentric centroid, arXiv:2610.31642) keep both the token-level loss and the polytope vertex weights alive across all $2K$ directions simultaneously β€” lifting Train-40 to 37/40 (92.50% Pass@1, 156/160 = 97.50% slots) and HeldOut-16 to 11/16 (68.75% Pass@1, 56/64 = 87.50% slots).

  • Check 3B (Standalone Logit Equivalence vs. PEFT LoRA Adapter): Mean cosine similarity across the full vocabulary = 0.999987 (min 0.999973), 5/5 (100%) top-1 greedy token agreement.
  • Check 3C (Standalone Live Code Generation & Unit Test Execution, lora=None): 5/5 (100%) live generation & unit-test pass (rolling_max, truncate_number, add, triangle_area, modp).
