Astro-edu 1.0
A BritxAI educational deployment preset, built on Qwen2.5-Math-7B-Instruct.
Astro-edu 1.0 is BritxAI's first public demo model: a privately-hostable, education-focused configuration of the open-source Qwen2.5-Math-7B-Instruct model, packaged for UK schools and tutoring providers that require on-premise or private-cloud deployment.
This is a demo release. It is intended for evaluation, classroom pilots under teacher supervision, and feedback collection — not for unsupervised use by pupils.
What this model is (and is not)
Astro-edu 1.0 is:
- A rebranded, redistributed instance of
Qwen/Qwen2.5-Math-7B-Instruct(Apache 2.0), packaged by BritxAI Ltd. with an education-oriented system prompt and deployment configuration. - Focused on supporting mathematics learning (Key Stage 2 through GCSE-level arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and problem-solving) in English.
- Designed to run locally or in a BritxAI-hosted private environment, so that no pupil data is sent to third-party AI providers.
Astro-edu 1.0 is not:
- A model trained or fine-tuned by BritxAI. No additional pre-training or fine-tuning has been performed on top of the base weights in this release. Behavioural differences from upstream Qwen2.5-Math-7B-Instruct come from the system prompt and inference configuration only.
- A replacement for qualified teachers, SEND support, or safeguarding staff.
- Suitable for subjects outside mathematics. Per the upstream model authors, Qwen2.5-Math is not recommended for non-mathematical tasks.
- A certified or accredited educational product. It has not been assessed against Department for Education, Ofsted, or exam-board standards.

Intended use
- Supervised classroom or homework-support use with pupils aged 11–16, in the presence of, or with logs reviewed by, a qualified teacher or guardian.
- Evaluation pilots by schools, MATs, and tutoring organisations assessing privacy-preserving AI deployment options.
- Maths homework hints, worked-example generation, and step-by-step explanation — always with teacher review of outputs before classroom use.
Out-of-scope and prohibited uses
- Unsupervised use by children.
- Assessed or exam coursework where AI use is not permitted.
- Subjects other than mathematics.
- Safeguarding-sensitive conversations. The model is not a counsellor, is not trained on mental-health content, and must not be used as one.
- Generating content about identifiable real people, including pupils or staff.
- Any use prohibited by the Apache 2.0 licence, UK law, or the deploying organisation's policies.
Known limitations
- Hallucination. Like all LLMs, Astro-edu 1.0 can produce confident but incorrect answers, including in mathematics. All outputs require human verification before being relied upon.
- Domain narrowness. The upstream model is optimised for mathematics. Out-of-domain queries (history, English literature, personal advice) may return low-quality or inappropriate responses.
- Language. Performance is strongest in English; other languages are not supported in this release.
- No built-in safety filter for child users. This demo release does not include a fine-tuned child-safety layer. Deploying organisations are responsible for adding input/output filtering, logging, and human oversight appropriate to their safeguarding policies.
- Base-model biases. Any biases, inaccuracies, or inappropriate outputs present in Qwen2.5-Math-7B-Instruct are inherited by Astro-edu 1.0.
Data protection and safeguarding (UK)
Schools, tutors, and other deployers are reminded that:
- Processing children's personal data engages UK GDPR and the ICO's Age Appropriate Design Code (Children's Code). A Data Protection Impact Assessment should be completed before live pupil use.
- Duties under the Online Safety Act 2023 may apply to how outputs are surfaced to users.
- Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) safeguarding duties apply to any AI tool used with pupils, including logging and human review.
BritxAI provides the model under a private-deployment model so that no pupil prompts or outputs are transmitted to BritxAI or any third party by default. Deployers retain full data controller responsibility for their instance.
Licence
Astro-edu 1.0 is distributed under the Apache License 2.0, the same
licence as the upstream Qwen2.5-Math-7B-Instruct model. See LICENSE and
NOTICE in this repository.
The model is provided "AS IS", without warranty of any kind, including but not limited to fitness for educational use, accuracy of outputs, or suitability for any safeguarding-sensitive context. Use is at the deployer's own risk.
