Model for detection of Orientalization of Japan in newspaper articles
This model was based on the original HerBERT Base.
The model was finetuned on a set of Polish press articles mentioning Japan from the years 1818-1939 to recognize if an article (or any input text) presents a genuine description of Japan, or whether it is an example of the orientalization of Japan. By orientalization we mean when a text represents Japan through the lenses of Orientalism, or a viewpoint that presents a piece of Eastern culture, in this case - Japan - in a deformed, distorted, and idealized form. In the definition of Orientalism we follow the work by Edward Said, especially his book "Orientalism".
