Do I need a vae file?

Installed webui and it was working as intended for anything v3 with their ckpt and vae files. Downloaded waifu diffusion, tried with and without anything's vae files and it doesn't seem to be working correctly. At least I can't get anywhere close to what is shown at release notes page. Am I doing something wrong?
