Because they wouldn’t want us to learn anything about their civilization or technology until we had developed enough technologically ourselves that any knowledge would be beneficial rather than harmful. Even if our primitive planet was richer in resources than other planets at similar levels of development, there may not be a reason for them to come here – especially since we have no evidence yet of advanced extraterrestrial life.
Therefore, unless you have some pretty compelling reasons why they might want to help you out (like, maybe we invented something useful), just don’t let them know you exist. If they can see us but we can’t see them, then they are probably too busy developing technologies to worry much about us anyway, so don’t expect much assistance…
