What are the main types of llamas?

Answer

There are two broad types - those that have a “proper” camel coat and those that don’t. Those without will be smaller, less shaggy and more suitable for milking. The ones with coats may be used as pack animals or even ridden (but this is unusual).

All llamas can serve as guard animals against predators such as foxes etc, but most farmers won’t do it because they need to keep them calm at other times so they might run off when there’s danger nearby. They are also better at detecting rustlers than dogs because their hearing is much keener.

Note: in North America many people call alpacas “llamas”. This is incorrect; llamas belong to South America whereas alpaca come from North-Western South America…
