A shark is in my pool. How do I get rid of him?
Question:
A shark is in my pool. How do I get rid of him?
Answer:
There are a few things you can try to keep the sharks away from your pool, but they won’t work if there really is one in your pool - it will just be more determined than any of them to stay!
1. Add Chlorine or Pool Salt
Adding chlorine or salt to the water is supposed to make swimming pools unpleasant for all sorts of animals including sharks (and even humans). The idea is that anything that drinks the water and tries to eat something else will die because the chlorinated/salty water makes their mouth and throat too painful to breathe through. However, this only works on predators which don’t need freshwater for survival - so sharks aren’t affected by it.
2. Use Shark-Repelling Products
There are various products available which claim to repel sharks - some use smell, others use sound, still others have no known mechanism at all. As far as we know, none of these actually work against real live sharks, although they might deter other fish species who mistake the chemicals for food.
3. Build an Electric Fence Around Your Pool
This may seem like a silly suggestion, but it has been done before! In 2006, several people reported seeing a shark in their pool near New York City. They tried everything except using electricity to drive the animal out of the pool, but when nothing worked, they gave up and called the police. After a while, however, a member of the public suggested that an electric fence would probably scare off the shark. It turned out that the electric shock was enough to discourage the shark, and he never returned again. This technique isn’t likely to work with most residential pools, though; large commercial pools tend to have higher voltages of electricity running through them anyway, and they also usually contain much larger amounts of salt water.
4. Cover Your Pond
Covering your pond with a mesh screen could help
