Tried uploading two pdfs , and also using the URL... tried a couple of pretty plain pdf's, mostly text, that did have the odd image.... Firefox and Brave browsers..

I'm sorry to hear that you were having trouble with it. However, I wanted to let you know that there is NO problem with your PDFs.
Actually, my OpenAI $18 grant has been exhausted and I need to give more money to OpenAI to turn on the space again.
In the meantime, I'm thinking of adding a new input box to the app, where users can enter their own OpenAI API key and use the app as much as they want.
I'm also getting that error, with my own API key in the new box.
The PDF content is, admittedly, quite technical and complex.

...but I was able to paste snippets into ChatGPT as plain text, and it interpreted those accurately (without manually reformatting any part of it).
I'll try to install your code locally, so I can log the errors in more detail.
