Why SauerkrautLM?

For many months now, the open-source LLM community has been predominantly shaped by English-speaking language models, often centered around various animal themes like llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas. It's evident that English-speaking models will continue to play a significant role in the open-source landscape, given the language's widespread global acceptance. However, we firmly believe that a European response to this should be about creating something new, unique, and authentically European. Something that can become a shared cultural touchstone for all of us. "What could that be?" we pondered, and the immediate answer that came to us was: food. Europe boasts a rich and renowned culinary heritage that's celebrated worldwide. Thus, the idea took root in our minds that Europe could pioneer the development of delectable LLM dishes and meals using diverse ingredients from across the continent. To kickstart this venture, we contemplated a dish close to our hearts and familiar to everyone in Germany. This is why we've named our model series 'SauerkrautLM.' It's a dish we adore, one that harmonizes well with other culinary traditions, and potentially serves as a key ingredient in a European response that deviates from the animal-themed open-source models.
