"text": "Fanny and Alexander (The Criterion Collecton Theatrical & Television Version) (1983).\nIt was instantly acclaimed the crowning masterwork of Ingmar Bergman's career, and time has not dimmed the Olympian status of Fanny and Alexander. Bergman drew upon memories of his own childhood for this portrait of the Ekdahls, the upper-class Swedish family whose celebrations and tribulations are seen through the eyes of 10-year-old Alexander (Bertil Guve). The world of the theater, of puppet shows and magic lanterns, does battle in this scenario with the cold realities of the palace of the bishop--a man whose influence over Alexander's mother gives the movie the stark outlines of a fairy tale. As for the Criterion five-disc DVD: This may be the most beautiful DVD release ever devoted to a single film. The original 188-minute international release is here, of course, in all its original glory. (It won four Oscars: foreign language film, costumes, art direction/set decoration, and cinematography--the last to longtime Bergman collaborator Sven Nykvist.) An audio commentary by Peter Cowie gives useful background. That film was carved out of Bergman's preferred 312-minute version, telecast on Swedish TV and included here. While the shorter cut remains a wonderful movie, and complete unto itself, the five-hour film is a deep, luxurious expansion. There is more of the Christmas Eve party that begins the film, more of the theater, more of Alexander's imagination. Especially meaningful is a long sequence between Fanny and Alexander and their doomed father, as he demonstrates the nature of storytelling with a simple chair. Also here is The Making of Fanny and Alexander, Bergman's feature-length self-portrait, and a fascinating look at the rapt attention he bestows on actors and camera. DVD extras include a penetrating hourlong TV interview Bergman gave in 1984, and a 40-minute documentary shot in 2004 with reminiscences from cast and crew (including actors Guve, Pernilla August, and Erland Josephson). A handsome booklet includes essays by Rick Moody and Paul Arthur, and one disc is made up of pithy introductions shot by Bergman in 2003, for 11 of his classics, plus a sampling of trailers. Fanny and Alexander was Bergman's final theatrical film, though he has gone right on making TV movies and writing screenplays. This is a fitting treatment of his triumph. --Robert Horton\tThrough the wide eyes of ten-year-old Alexander (Bertil Guve), we witness the great delights and conflicts of the Ekdahl familya sprawling, convivial bourgeois clan living in turn-of-the-century Sweden. Intended as Ingmar Bergmans swan song, Fanny and Alexander (Fanny och Alexander) is the legendary filmmakers warmest and most autobiographical film, a triumph that combines his trademark melancholy and emotional rigor with immense joyfulness and sensuality. The Criterion Collection is proud to present not only the theatrical versionwinner of the 1984 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Filmbut also, for the first time on home video in the U.S., the original five-hour television version, together in a single boxed set. Also included is Bergmans own feature-length documentary The Making of Fanny and Alexander (Dokument Fanny och Alexander), offering a unique glimpse into his creative process and a candid behind-the-scenes look at a monumental film in the making. INCLUDED WITH FANNY AND ALEXANDER, FOR THE FIRST TIME ON DVD: THE MAKING OF FANNY AND ALEXANDER The Making of Fanny and Alexander is a fascinating look at the creation of a masterpiece. Directed by Ingmar Bergman himself, this feature-length documentary chronicles the methods of one of cinemas true luminaries as he labors to realize his crowning production. Featuring Bergman at work with many of his longtime collaboratorsincluding cinematographer Sven Nykvist and actors Erland Josephson, Gunnar Bjrnstrand, and Harriet AnderssonThe Making of Fanny and Alexander is a witty and revealing portrait of a virtuoso filmmaker.",

"text": "Web Site Graphics: Typography: The Best Work From The Web.\nAnother entry in the Web Site Graphics series, Typography: The Best Work from the Web features Web sites that outshine others in their use of type. \"Each site draws some advantage from or is designed for the Web, and takes into account the special requirements needed to render or display type in a small, scrollable, and live window.\" It's not surprising that many of the typographically outstanding sites shown here are from design firms. For example, Cow.Interactive Communications (www.cow.com) is an interactive design firm whose Web site shows a creative yet spare use of a single typeface with small, interactive lines of text, simple images, and blocks of color. Studiomotiv (www.studiomotiv.com) shows off the beauty of classic letterforms even while it informs viewers of the history and anatomy of type design. Typography also celebrates sites that run counter to accepted notions of \"good typography.\" Typographic.com (www.typographic.com) pushes the envelope of readability with its postmodern deconstructed text and navigational scheme, almost daring the viewer to persevere through the site. Bianca (www.bianca.com), an online community, takes another \"anti-typography\" route by using naive handwriting for headings and a site map that looks like a child's drawing. Typography is not a how-to book. As with the others in this series, it shows, using ample color illustrations, a few of the best in Web design, chosen by the knowledgeable and discriminating authors. It's the quickest way to find out what's on the cutting edge. --Angelynn Grant Topics covered: screen captures of many Web sites showing innovative uses of typography in Web design, with captions explaining why each site was chosen and listing artistic credits; an index with the names and addresses of all design firms involved.\tJeff Carlson spent several years doing desktop publishing before jumping into the Web publishing arena by founding and editing, eSCENE, the Internet's only yearly anthology of the best short fiction appearing on the Web. "text": "Breaking Ranks: Turbulent Travels in the Promised Land (Lonely Planet Travel Literature).\nThe latest in Lonely Planet's Journeys series has one foot in the social sciences and one in the travelogue genre. First-time author Black lived and traveled in Israel for 10 years; the book follows the parallel development of Black's perspective and Israel's political trends from innocent optimism to mature realism. Black, who grew up in Scotland, spends a year on a kibbutz and makes several remarkable journeys to parts of the Middle East not usually visited by tourists. Meanwhile, \"during those same formative years, between eighteen and twenty-one, my peers in Israel were conscripted to the army,\" fighting against the Palestinian intifada. After meeting his future wife and moving back to the U.K., in 1994 Black returns to the Holy Land, drawn by the opportunities of \"a time when the word `peace' had taken on mantra status, when the Oslo accords were but a year old.\" Black recounts extraordinary details about places like Petra in Jordan, an ancient \"lost\" city of Israel whose \"intoxicating\" architecture induced generations of Israeli youth to attempt illegal visits, before the 1994 Israeli-Jordanian treaty opened it up to Israelis. Soon, though, the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin and other terrorism by Islamic fundamentalists refueled Israel's right wing. Black, who becomes an Israeli citizen, must decide between army service or leaving the country as \"a conscientious objector.\" This is a fascinating read that should be required for any young person thinking of visiting or moving to Israel, as well as for older readers seeking a better firsthand account of the lives of Israeli youth. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.\tAt the age of three, Black took the first of many trips to Israel with his Scottish parents, committed but nonreligious Jews. At 18, he experienced a formative year working with classmates on a kibbutz on the Lebanese border. After returning to the U.K. and university, Black realized that he felt more at home in Israel, and finally, at age 24, he decided to settle there and become an Israeli citizen. His narrative combines autobiography, travel descriptions, and political analysis to give readers a strong picture of Israel during 1995 and 2001. As the story progresses, readers are able to follow Black's maturation from young, pot-smoking, beer-drinking adolescent into a thoughtful, literate, and pacifist adult. While reading Black's lyrical descriptions of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Masada, the Dead Sea, Jaffa, and Haifa, this reviewer, who has previously made three long trips to Israel, felt she was experiencing the unique quality of life all over again. This debut will not disappoint Lonely Planet readers who have come to appreciate the offbeat and nontraditional approach that characterizes their publications. Definitely recommended for all libraries with large travel or strong Middle Eastern collections. Olga B. Wise, Compaq Computer Corp., Austin, TX Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.\tBlack is a Scottish Jew with strong family ties to Israel. After graduating from a British university, he immigrated to Israel in 1996. His book provides an intimate look at Israel from the perspective of a liberal Zionist. His portraits of kibbutz life, of Petra after the Jordanian border opened, and of daily existence in a country divided by religious and political extremes take readers beyond the surface treatment available in most armchair travel books. Black, who supports a Palestinian state and worked for the Meretz party during the 1996 election, felt the conflicts of Israeli life firsthand when he received his draft notice and decided that he would not join the army. The country does not permit conscientious objectors, so Black was forced to flee when his appeal was denied. Now considered a deserter, he and his wife live in Australia, and he can never return to the country that he loves. Readers will be fascinated by this intensely personal look at contemporary Israel. Barbara BibelCopyright American Library Association. All rights reserved\tIn \"Breaking Ranks\" the predicaments Black faced act as portals into different journeys with the mosaic of Israeli society. The result is a moving account of an ordinary young man coming of age in extraordinary circumstances. Blacks first-hand encounter with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is written with a passion and immediacy that cannot fail to touch readers. Afterall, this story is for others as relevant as it was for Black over a decade ago. Lonely Planet Journeys is a travel literature series that captures the place, illuminates a culture, recounts an adventure or introduces a fascinating way of life. Written by a diverse group of authors, these books are tales to read while on the road or at home in your favorite armchair.",

"text": "Melchior's Fire.\nThis serviceable action-SF novel of far-future starfaring opens with a useful prologue, bringing the reader up to speed on the planets called the Three Kings Balshazzar, Melchior and Kaspar, satellites of a gas giant and the source of incredibly valuable alien artifacts and the events of the first book in the series, Balshazzar's Serpent (2000). To set up the journey to volcanic, overheated and alien-inhabited Melchior, the author spends nearly half the novel driving his characters, a piratical interstellar salvage crew, to the verge of bankruptcy or worse. They suffer this fate on a deserted colony planet, through the agency of an alien entity who has ingested the previous colonists and is considerably more interesting than anything they later encounter. Thanks to a media mogul, the salvagers embark on a perilous journey through \"wild wormholes\" to the Three Kings. Once in the system, they discover that Balshazzar holds colonies from several races under a benign but total alien despotism. Reaching Melchior, the spacefarers find it positively swarming with alien races at which point the action slams to a cliffhanger ending as the crew barely survives a telepathic attack. The author has apparently tried to cram two comparatively self-contained tales into a book so short that neither story is really developed adequately. One can only hope Chalker will devote more attention to narrative technique in the inevitable saga of ice-bound Kaspar, last of the Three Kings. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.",

"text": "Foreign Attachments: The Power of Ethnic Groups in the Making of American Foreign Policy.\nWith the end of the Cold War, the United States has lost the one overwhelming objective that dominated its foreign policy for more than four decades, and is left as the only superpower. As a result, foreign policy is up for grabs. Ethnic groups, and also economic interests, have moved in to capture and suborn American power to serve their own purposes. But are their purposes American purposes? Who speaks for America? Smith argues that in this situation of no overriding national priorities, American foreign policy is increasingly susceptible to the undue influence of ethnic interests. This is a politically and intellectually important thesis, and Smith sets it forth in an extremely well-argued and well-written book. (Samuel P. Huntington, author of The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order)To a subject that usually generates more heat than light, Tony Smith, in this landmark study, brings cool analysis and illuminating insights. (Ronald Steel, author of Temptations of a Superpower (Harvard))Foreign Attachments is a thought-provoking and timely book, which deftly shows the interconnections between American pluralism and U.S. foreign relations. Smith explores the difficult question of whether or not there is an essential national interest removed from the vagaries of party and ethnic interests. His book is necessary reading for anyone interested in the conjucture of race, ethnicity, and foreign policy at the beginning of the twenty-first century. (Ibrahim K. Sundiata, Howard University)In showing how ethnic groups influence, and often try to dictate, American foreign policy, and how the structure of American politics facilitates their access to and control of power, Smith raises a vital issue: how inevitable, indeed desirable, pluralism can be kept compatible with the preservation of national unity and citizenship, how national identity can continue to prevail over ethnic identity. This is an important contribution to the public philosophy of American politics. (Stanley Hoffmann, Harvard University)Tony Smith's Foreign Attachments is an important and provocative book about central issues in American democracy. It should be one of the most talked-about books of the year, and will be required reading for anyone who wants to take part in the conversation. (David Fromkin, author of Kosovo Crossing: American Ideals Meet Reality on the Balkan Battlefield)Ethnic lobbies, while not new in American politics, have grown in influence since the end of the cold war, says Tony Smith...[Smith] agrees that ethnic groups have a right to organize to promote their values and interests...[but] ethnic groups have an obligation to recognize that national interests may conflict with their preferences...Throughout, Smith urges supporters of multiculturalism in foreign policy to be more 'self-critical' of how they talk about democratic citizenship. (Nina C. Ayoub Chronicle of Higher Education)\tWith the end of the Cold War, the United States has lost the one overwhelming objective that dominated its foreign policy for more than four decades, and is left as the only superpower. While's she's wonderful as a saucy showgirl with a knack for foreign relations, Monroe's off-screen notoriety in 1957 made this a directorial nightmare for Olivier, who never bursts out of his stiff-collared finery as the Carpathian Prince Regent, who's smitten by Marilyn's innocent, unpolished candor. Of course, she's actually smarter than the monocled monarch, at least in her sensible handling of his stuffed-shirt diplomacy, so it's easy to forgive Terence Rattigan's script (from his play The Sleeping Prince) for favoring pomp over circumstance. The comedy percolates without bubbling over in this tale of opposites attracting, but it's a top-drawer production anyway, blessed by Jack Cardiff's gorgeous Technicolor cinematography and by the charm of costars who successfully concealed their off-screen anxieties. --Jeff Shannon",

The MultiPro rotary tool is the handful of power behind a thousand uses, with supreme control and ergonomic comfort and, truth be told, its tremendous fun to use. Its five speed sets range from 5,000 to a router-like 35,000 rpm, and combined with a seemingly endless array of bits and attachments, you can carve, grind, polish, trim, sand, cut a wide range of material, shape, clean, remove grout, smooth, drill, rout, sculpt, sharpen, engrave, strip finishes kind of like being a superhero with gadgets that never end. The secret ingredient is the speed. With a bit moving at 35,000 rpm, you dont need to lean into the job at all; on the contrary, we found a light touch to be the most effective, and the tool does the work for you. Control is superb, thanks to a comfortable housing and excellent balance whether youre doing detail work with a pencil-like grip or grasping the tool like a tennis racquet. Its light as a feather at just about a pound, so even working at shoulder height or above is no chore. Bit change is fast and easy; the collet locks with a button and the wrench stores on board. This set comes with 10 bits to get you started, but have a look at other accessory sets too, because once you get this Dremel in hand, its addictive. Youll want to pick up the flex shaft and right-angle attachments for cramped quarters, add on a router-type base, and maybe even get the stand that turns the tool into a mini drill press. If youve never had a rotary tool, you absolutely cant go wrong with this one, and if youre upgrading from a single- or dual-speed model, youll love it. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste\tHigh-speed rotary tool provides up to 35,000 rpm to make projects easier.; Comfort grip housing for easier handling and better control.; Lightweight design makes it easy to use in any position.; Click-and-set on/off switch allows more precise speed selection.; Cool-running ball bearing construction provides smooth and quiet operation.; Replaceable motor brushes help extend tool life.; Accepts more than 150 Dremel accessory bits.; Can be used with a variety of versatile attachments.; Variable speed (5,000-35,000 rpm); 120 Volt AC, 50-60 Hz, 1.15 Amps; 6' Power Cord; 5 year warranty; Includes: #395 Variable-Speed MultiPro Tool, 10 assorted bits, Quick Start Book, Quick-Change Collet Nut, #90962 Open End Collet Wrench,",

The pianist is backed here by a bevy of New York's premier session players and jazz stars: drummer Steve Gadd; ace sax players Michael Brecker, Kenny Garrett, and Steve Cole; and guitarist Pat Martino. Chestnut proves as inventive as always, playing with lighthearted wit and lyrical sophistication. He captures the whimsy of such Peanuts classics as \"Skating\" and the winning interplay of \"Linus and Lucy,\" delightfully mixing it up with Martino's guitar figures. Chestnut also pays fond homage to the whole Peanuts gang with his memorable opening solo, \"Me and Charlie Brown.\" Joined by Vanessa Williams and the Boys Choir of Harlem on \"Christmas Time Is Here,\" Chestnut and company work their understated magic on this and other traditional fare. Somewhere, Charles Schultz is nodding his head in time to these lovely tunes and updates. --Martin Keller\tYou may know Cyrus Chestnut from his solo recordings and work with Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, and Betty Carter, but the pianist unearths his earliest musical roots on the new Christmas release, A Charlie Brown Christmas. In high school the young Chestnut was known as the piano player who could play the Peanuts theme score, his childhood introduction to jazz. Thirty-five years after the original recordings by Vince Guaraldi, the remake by Cyrus Chestnut & Friends features American holiday classics like \"Christmas Time is Here\" (with vocalists Vanessa Williams and the Boys Choir of Harlem), \"Linus and Lucy\" (saxophonist Kenny Garrett, guitarist Pat Martino), and \"What Child is This?\", with vocalists the Manhattan Transfer, vibraphonist Stefon Harris, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Steve Gadd.--- JAZZIZ Magazine Copyright 2000, Milor Entertainment, Inc. -- From Jazziz",

The gaming instructor at the Las Vegas Hilton, Sam Micco, serves as the host, getting things to a lively start with detailed lessons at the blackjack table, covering the basic rules and giving some valuable pointers on strategy. The same basic format is followed for other games, including roulette, craps, baccarat, and even slot machines. The expert instructors offer a lot of information, and having these detailed lessons on video allows one to rewind and review, something that will be necessary for anyone serious about ingesting all the material presented. Outlines of critical information, such as the rules of various games, appear onscreen in written form, which is especially helpful for games with complicated rules. Despite the video's optimistic title, the instructors are conscientious about noting how even the most skilled players can only narrow the odds, and the house will always have an advantage. Given the competition, that may seem a rather dubious distinction, but one listen to The Pied Piper of Jazz will convince all but the most skeptical. Culled from a number of Atlantic recordings (circa 1966-67), these tunes prove that Harley's instrument is far more than a novelty. Combining a droning nasal sound, reminiscent of John Coltrane's \"My Favorite Things\" soprano sax style, Harley coaxes the bagpipes to swing soulfully on \"Feeling Good\" and \"Bagpipe Blues.\" His more conventional tenor sax is featured on \"Pipin' the Blues\" (along with guest Sonny Stitt), and his Roland Kirk-influenced flute sound is displayed on \"More.\" In short, the idiosyncratic elements of Harley's bagpipes sound downright hip when he's on sax and flute, two obviously more pivotal jazz horns. What's ultimately fresh here is that mix of soulful, standard jazz methodology and something almost entirely new, even decades after Harley's pipes were caught on tape. --Wally Shoup",

Sara continued to develop products for fellow yogis, including the companys namesake, Hugger-Muggers, the now-famous unisex yoga shorts with a legband around the thighs to cover whats underneath. Since the word hugger-mugger means to conceal, the catchy name Hugger-Mugger fit. Among Hugger-Mugger's most noted designs is the Tapas Sticky Mat, which has become the yoga practice essential. Predecessor mats were not designed specifically for yoga and would deteriorate quickly with us. The Tapas Sticky Mat was the first long-term performance yoga mat and continues to set the standards for the industry. For more than 20 years, Hugger-Mugger has been known as an innovator of technically excellent yoga products serving yoga teachers and students throughout the world. Hugger-Mugger is committed to developing products of performance, style, and comfort. The company strongly believes in the benefits of the practices of yoga and meditation.\tAn economical and easy way to keep your mat clean and easy to transport. Simple and functional. Will hold all Hugger Mugger Tapas mats. This nylon mat bag features a drawstring closure and a shoulder strap.",

"text": "Frank Parker: Champion in the Golden Age of Tennis.\n\"...a great job of bringing Frank Parker's career back to life for a generation who never saw him play.\" -- Mark S. Young II, Archivist/Librarian at International Tennis Hall of Fame\tFrank Parker's remarkable life story is a tale of adventure, competition, love, betrayal, and success. His ticket was amateur tennis, before the game turned pro, in an era when the sport was funded by the wealthy and played solely for love of the game. From the age of eight, when Frank shagged balls at his hometown tennis club, his affection for the sport and natural talent were evident. He won his first national tournament at the age of 14, earning him the nickname \"Boy Wonder of Tennis.\" Though holding the record during his career for most USLTA top ten rankings, Frank's skill was overshadowed by WWII and his scandalous marriage to his coach's former wife. Yet his talents are remembered by those who knew him and rivaled him on the courts. The book features quotes from several of Frank's contemporaries including Gardnar Mulloy, Pancho Segura, Ted Schroeder, Eddie Moylan, Bill Talbert, Tony Trabert, Gene Mako, and Cliff Sutter.\tCynthia Beardsley, an avid tennis player, met Frank Parker in 1990 when she began taking tennis lessons from him at McClurg Court Sports Center in Chicago, Illinois. Over the next seven years she and Frank became close friends and tennis companions. Ms. Beardsley is a Chicago freelance researcher and writer with a B.A. in Communication and an M.A. in History from DePaul University.\tForeword: Though tennis great Frank Parker led a quiet, subdued, and dignified life, his tennis racket made noise throughout the world. He captivated not only tennis fans, who idolized his classic style and impeccable attire, but also women, who considered his legs the best looking on tour. His was an era of wooden rackets, weary non-air travel, and meager expenses in which most players were true sportsmen. Frank never questioned a call or argued with an umpire, but opponents hated him on the court as he relentlessly and expressionlessly took them apart like a cool experienced knife fighter. Between matches, Frank's adversaries admired his quiet reserved manner and never questioned his authoritative tennis wisdom. He would show up for a match, clobber his opponent, sing in good voice as he showered, and return home with his wife, Audrey, to their patiently waiting cat. Frank had little outward demeanor, and few could figure him out. Many contended his tennis game was vulnerable with a suspect hitch in his forehand. However, Frank's forehand always seemed to hold up under attack, allowing his backhand to penetrate his opponent's court as if he were a shooter in a shooting gallery. Playing in today's tennis market Frank would surely be a major prizewinner. Frank Parker's biography is the story of a man who had an unusual, exciting, and successful life of boyhood tennis, national championships, Davis Cup participation, and World War II adventure. He was Mr. Tennis-a legend in his own time. Preface: I met Frank Parker in 1990 when I began taking tennis lessons from him at the McClurg Court Sports Center in downtown Chicago. I particularly enjoyed Frank's great sense of humor during my lessons. He always made me laugh with witty expressions, such as \"higher Meyer\" when my serve didn't make it over the net. We became close friends and continued to play tennis together for the next seven years. It was Frank's idea to write this book. I had just completed my masters degree in history in June 1996, when Frank asked me if I would write his biography. I was honored and agreed to take on the task. A few days later Frank was at my door with bags of articles and photographs. I spent weeks sorting them chronologically. Over the next several months I met Frank every other week to discuss the book's progress. In July of 1997 Frank became ill and died shortly thereafter. He never saw the completed manuscript. I continued the project after his death as a tribute to a man who had been not only my tennis instructor but a very dear friend.",

"text": "Minus Equals Plus.\nA gifted writer writes the way life feels. Istvan Banyai is one of the very few people who draw that way. This book is a gift, because it offers page after uninterrupted page of his drawings and his entropic world. There is a gracefully short and moving introduction by Kurt Andersen, and then it is clear sailing until the end, where Banyai offers a winding life story disguised as a curriculum vitae. His famous sleight of hand with scale and representation win him a place between art, illustration, and design, one that has made him the reigning master of visual narrative. Minus Equals Plus is his first retrospective monograph, and it has one drawback: the binding is flimsy and awkward even for a paperback. This is a shame, because it's a book that one could \"read\" backwards and forwards for months and years. --Juliette Cezzar\tDescribing his work as \"an organic combination of turn-of-the-century Viennese retro, interjected with American pop, some European absurdity added for flavor, served on a cartoon-style color palette... no social realism added,\" illustrator Istvan Banyai is well known to Americans, if not by name. His dreamlike drawings have appeared in Absolut ads, in his Zoom series of children's books, in magazines like the New Yorker and animated short films for Nickelodeon and MTV. Minus Equals Plus: Istvan Banyai collects 250 of his illustrations (150 in color) and includes an introduction by Kurt Andersen, veteran magazine editor (formerly of New York), currently columnist for the New Yorker and founder of Inside.com. \"Istvan World always seems to be coming apart at the seams,\" Andersen writes, \"but the entropy... may not be disintegration at all, but a metamorphosis into some kooky new state of harmony.\" Complicated and dark enough for adults, Banyai's work is also fun, serendipitous and mischievous enough for kids. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.\tWhimsical and witty, Banyai has created illustrations for such diverse venues as Playboy and Absolut vodka ads, as well as creating animation and children's books, notably Zoom (1995). Accompanied only by a brief and enthusiastic introduction and an autobiographical postscript, Banyai's clever and always surprising images of intricate little worlds are presented in full-color, two-page spreads interspersed with black-and-white drawings and smaller color images, each of which is a feast for the eyes. Bold and bright in color and composition, his illustrations toy with perspective and perception. One of his favorite and most enjoyable ploys is a progressive shifting of the focal point, a pseudo-animation, beginning for example with a man sitting at a desk working on a laptop, then moving out to a cityscape, a billboard, and beyond. And his tiny flipbook animations are particularly nifty. Regina SchroederCopyright American Library Association. Hitchens reserves his fiercest scorn for Henry Kissinger, who helped subvert Chilean democracy, betrayed the Kurds and colluded with Indonesia in its genocidal invasion of East Timor. "text": "Twister [VHS] (1996).\nTwister was a mega-million-dollar blockbuster--helmed by a director (Dutchman Jan de Bont) hot off another scorcher hit (Speed)--that flaunted state-of-the-art digital effects and featured a popular leading actress (Helen Hunt) who would win an Academy Award for her next film (As Good As It Gets). But ask anybody who's seen it and they'll tell you who the real star of Twister is: the cow. Not to give anything away, but the cow is one of those inspired little touches (like, say, Bronson Pinchot's career-making cameo in Beverly Hills Cop) that adds a touch of personality to a gigantic Hollywood production. The story is blown out the window after an impressive prologue in which Hunt's character, as a little girl, witnesses her daddy being sucked into a tornado. Basically, Hunt and Bill Paxton are thrill-seeking meteorologists chasing twisters in order to study them (and help warn people of them, of course) with a new technology they've developed. If you thought the Kansas tornado in The Wizard of Oz was every bit as scary as the Wicked Witch of the West, then this may be the movie for you. --Jim Emerson",

Some of the most exacting and demanding moments from Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty and The Nutcracker are presented, showing to great effect the prowess of the corps de ballet and stars alike. David Coleman conducts some of the musical highlights from the three Tchaikovsky's ballets, all of which are held in high esteem in the hearts and minds of ballet fans: Swan Lake, in Vladimir Bourmeister's version, Sleeping Beauty, with choreographed by Marius Petipa and The Nutcracker, another familiar title for La Scala, this time in Patrice Bart's version. Jewels of music and dance all set in the Act III decor of Swan Lake: Prince Siegfried's birthday festivities are being held in the castle hall, a veritable tornado of dances, from Czardas to Spanish, Neapolitan to Mazurka all of which leads into the celebrated Black Swan pas de deux, starring Roberto Bolle and Polina Semionova. As if by magic, another homage to Tchaikovsky appears: Aurora and her four princes in the immortal Rose Adagio, encompassing both dreamy sweetness and technical strength, being one of the most difficult choreographic passages of Sleeping Beauty alongside the Blue Bird pas de deux and the Act II pas de deux from The Nutcracker performed here by Nadja Saidakova and Ronald Savkovic.",

"text": "Bitter Trail.\n\"Elmer Kelton is an authentic American voice.\"--John Jakes\t --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.\tElmer Kelton (1926-2009) was the award-winning author of more than forty novels, including The Time It Never Rained, Other Mens Horses, Texas Standoff and Hard Trail to Follow. He grew up on a ranch near Crane, Texas, and earned a journalism degree from the University of Texas. His first novel, Hot Iron, was published in 1956. Among his awards have been seven Spurs from Western Writers of America and four Western Heritage awards from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. His novel The Good Old Boys was made into a television film starring Tommy Lee Jones. In addition to his novels, Kelton worked as an agricultural journalist for 42 years, and served in the infantry in World War II. He died in 2009.\t --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.\tBitter Trail1THE HORSE TRACKS APPEARED suddenly out of the chaparral, milled in brief disorder, then struck northward up the crooked wagon trail that snaked its dusty way through the mesquite and catclaw and prickly pear.Coming upon the tracks, Frio Wheeler reined his horse to a quick stop. His hand dropped instinctively toward the stock of the saddlegun beneath his leg. He peered through narrowed eyes at the trail, which disappeared into the rippling late-summer heatwaves and hostile brush. He took off his flat-brimmed black hat to wipe dust-thickened perspiration onto his sleeve and turned to the Mexican who rode beside him.\"What do you make of it, Blas?\"Sombreroed Blas Talamantes turned in his big-horned Mexico saddle to look at the tracks as they led out of the mesquite. Sweat-soaked, his homemade cotton shirt clung to his back.\"Twelve, maybeso fifteen horses.\"Frio Wheeler stepped from the saddle and squatted on the ground for a close look. He fingered the tracks. Not very old--an hour or two, maybe. Made since daylight, at least. \"A few years ago, I'd've said Indians.\"Blas Talamantes shook his head and pointed. \"A piece of cigar, Frio, over there. Vaqueros, maybe?\"\"Maybe cowboys. More likely renegades from across the Rio.\" Wheeler swung back onto his horse, took a grim look across the drought-stricken country, and brought the saddlegun up into his lap. \"Best listen hard, Blas, and keep our eyes peeled. There's a war on.\"This was the Rio Grande country of Texas in 1863, a small extension of the bloody conflict ablaze upon the battlefields of Virginia and Tennessee, upon the green rolling hills of Gettysburg. Here on the underbelly of the Confederacy lay the South's only open border, its only port free of the Union blockade. Along this thorn-studded trail to the Rio Grande, dust boiled high over trains of mule-drawn wagons and ox-drawn carts, carrying their heavy burden of Confederate cotton southward to be sold across the river in Mexico. Moving north, the same trains would carry war supplies for the Trans-Mississippi Department of the Confederacy--rifles, powder and bar lead, sulphur, mercury, and cloth. At the end of this trail across the barren sands and the forbidding chaparral waited the twin cities of the Rio--Brownsville on the Texas bank, Matamoros on the Mexican. Once sleepy border towns, separated by the sluggish waters of the muddy Bravo, they had awakened to the rattle of sabers and the boom of cannon. They were swollen now and bustling with the international commerce of war. Gold coin clinked tothe groan of wagon wheels, and tequila spilled in the streets.Though this was a long way from Virginia, men rode with eyes open and their guns ready to use, for the hatreds of war had come to the Rio. By the hundreds, Texans with Union sympathies had fled southward across the river. Some had gone north by boat from Bagdad and other Mexican ports to join Lincoln's forces and wear the blue. Others remained in Mexico. Many of these waited impatiently in Matamoros, listening eagerly for war news, looking across the river with longing eyes at a homeland that now had become an enemy. Sometimes, in league with border bandits of either Anglo or Mexican blood, these men swam the river at night to raid and burn in the name of the Union, then ride back to sanctuary across that narrow, muddy boundary. Renegados, the Confederate Texans called them, using the Mexican name. It was a time of indistinct loyalties and confused hatreds, when friends had become enemies and old enemies had somehow become friends--a mixed-up time when all the rules had been lost ... .Frio Wheeler touched big-roweled Mexican spurs to his sorrel's ribs and moved him into an easy trot. Wheeler sat upright in the saddle, shoulders squared with a pride born of his place and time. He was in his early thirties, though it would have been hard to guess his age from looking at him. He was a man seldom under roof. His skin was burned Mexican-brown from the scorching sun of Texas's ancient Camino Real, the Royal Road, and from wagon trails through the Wild Horse Desert and the chaparral. His brown hair, which needed a cutting, was beginning to show a glint of gray. Turkey tracks had bitten deep at the corners ofhis blue eyes, for he habitually squinted against the glare of the sun-drenched land.Riding beside him, Blas Talamantes was the more spectacular. His high-peaked Mexican sombrero was twice as wide as Wheeler's plain old black hat. His brown leather breeches were decorated with lacing laboriously sewn by a loving woman's nimble fingers. Wheeler had allowed his big spurs to darken with grime and tarnish, but Talamantes had kept his own polished to a bright silver. Both men rode with collars and sleeves buttoned against the sun. There was much about them that was similar--size, build, and age. By a like token there was much that was different--their upbringing, their heritage of two cultures a world apart. To Wheeler, the first consideration always was to tend to the business at hand. To Blas, business was not unimportant, but a man should also seek out whatever beauty, love, and adventure the day might yield, for there might not be a tomorrow; and if there were no tomorrow, the business would have been of little import. The two men had ridden together a long time now, and the things about them that were different had been put aside. Wheeler was patrn, and Talamantes was the man hired. But over and beyond that, they were compadres, so that it was not always apparent who was patrn and who was empleado.Blas Talamantes had the better ears. \"Frio, I hear shooting.\"Frio stopped and slowly turned his head, seeking the sound. It came to him on the hot breeze from uptrail.\"Renegados,\" he guessed, his mouth drawn tight. \"They've hit some small outfit that's short of men.\"\"Maybe yours,\" said Blas. They rode on with their rifles ready. The firing was nearer now, dropping down to a few sporadic shots and eventually stopping altogether. Presently they saw white smoke begin to spiral upward over the brush.\"Cotton smoke,\" Frio said. \"I expect that's some CSA bales that'll never make it to Matamoros.\"They heard hoofbeats drumming toward them. Frio jerked his head to one side, signaling Blas to pull out of the trail. \"Two of us couldn't dent them much,\" he said, \"but they could plow us under.\"This was a hostile country where almost everything went armed for its own protection, whether it be plant life or animal. The thick mesquites and catclaws at trailside were white-flecked with cotton scraps that their tough thorns had ripped from bale-laden wagons. Frio and Blas sought a way through this brush and the thick growth of man-tall prickly pear. They dismounted, rifles in hand, and stood with fingers over their horses' nostrils. The sound of the hooves came louder, and Frio could glimpse a flash of movement.Watching over a tall clump of pear, he saw the men pass by in a jog trot. He saw the black-clad Mexican in front, wearing a sombrero so wide that in the afternoon sun it cast a shadow to his waist. He saw the two Anglos who moved side by side, half a length behind the Mexican. Trailing these, a dozen more riders straggled along, all of them apparently Mexican. They led four strings of mules, these still wearing the harness with which they had drawn the cotton wagons. Trace chains rattled from the steady swing of their pace. The men passed, but the gray dust still hovered a while behind them, drifting at last out into the heavy brush.Frio Wheeler's eyes glowed with helpless anger.\"My mules.\" He swung back into the saddle, Blas following suit. \"Blas, did you see who was ridin' out in front?\"Blas nodded, his mouth grim. \"Florencio Chapa! Bandido muy malo, with a heart like a grinder's stone.\" He paused, looking at the ground. \"The gringos, you see who they are?\"Gringo could be a fighting word on the border if used in the wrong tone. But there was no offense in the matter-of-fact way Blas said it.Frio's jaw ridged with regret for what he had seen. He knew from Blas's eyes that the Mexican had known the men. \"You mean Tom McCasland? Yes, I recognized him.\"\"He is your best friend, Frio. Or he was.\" The last came more like a question.\"War changes things, Blas.\"\"That other gringo, he is Bige Campsey. In the old days Tom McCasland would never ride with a man like Campsey.\"Frio shook his head. \"Like I said, war makes a man do lots of things. Come on, we best go see how bad the damage is.\"They found five wagons strung out in the trail. The one in the lead, loaded with burning cotton bales, collapsed in a shower of sparks as Frio and Blas rode up. The other four wagons were being saved, though the Mexican teamsters were letting themselves be scorched to push burning bales out of the wagon beds and onto the ground. Without asking questions, Frio and Blas pitched in to help. They tossed their rawhide ropes over the tops of smoldering bales and spurred their horses out, dallying the ropes around their saddlehorns and pulling the bales down from the wagons. The raiders had missed dumping some of the waterbarrels. A sandy-haired young Texan was running back and forth, dipping water and pitching it onto a wagon, dousing flames. With the bales out of the way, some of the Mexican freighting crew shoveled dirt over the fires, slowly snuffing them out.Cotton smoke is a hard kind to take, and the choking smell of it clung awhile from the still-smouldering bales that lay about in scattered confusion. Cotton-bale fires were difficult to kill, but Frio thought most of these were under control. He had already given up on the sixteen bales in the collapsed lead wagon. A few others also were too far gone to save, for the stubborn fir...\t --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.",

"text": "The Everything Wine Book.\nYou know that you're not supposed to sniff the cork when the sommelier hands it to you in a restaurant, right? Well, don't feel bad if you don't. The cork is handed to you to show that it is in good condition and not rotting (which would allow oxygen to come in contact with the wine), and that only one end is wet, thus proving that the bottle was stored correctly. Unlike most other alcohol consumption, which is indiscriminate, wine is something that must be learned and practiced like a sport or a musical instrument. Yet most of us order the house red and politely sniff the cork, because we haven't a clue. The Everything Wine Book is a first step toward a vinifera education (the rest is practice, practice). Like a James Michener novel, albeit much shorter, The Everything Wine Book starts with the beginning of Western civilization, moves on to a discussion of geology, and winds up in the New World, where very fine, affordable pinot noir can be had. At 288 pages, it's a lesson that goes down easy. The authors cover all the major varieties, discuss wine production, explain why one vintage is superior to another, conduct a taste tour of the world's wine-producing nations, reveal the nuances of serving wine, tell what it means to let a bottle of wine \"breathe,\" and even provide advice regarding hangover prevention. So drink and be merry, secure in the knowledge that when you're done quaffing this book, you'll be able to authoritatively select perfectly wonderful wines in your price range. --Brenda Pittsley\tDanny May has taught wine appreciation classes, and has been both a sommelier (that's a restaurant wine guy) and professional wine salesman. Conventional cones and dome tweeters are based on a directional moving coil principle whereas the monopole Neodymium Ribbon Tweeter radiates high frequencies in a full 180-degree radiation pattern. Incredible Surround for enhanced audio enjoyment Incredible Surround is an audio technology from Philips that dramatically magnifies the sound field to immerse you in the audio. Using state-of-the-art electronic phase shifting, Incredible Surround mixes sounds from left and right in such a way that it expands the virtual distance between the two speakers. This wider spread greatly enhances the stereo effect and creates a more natural sound dimension. Incredible Surround allows you to experience total surround with greater depth and width of sound, without the use of additional speakers. The two women have entrusted Javier Auyero with stories few others would want to see in print: stories of suffering, indiscretion, indecision, bitterness, regret, and passion.Charles Tilly, Columbia Universityrdquo;Javier Auyero proves that you can go home againmdash;and that with the proper experience elsewhere you can see more than you would have noticed if you had never left. Returning to his native Argentina as a sympathetic, well trained observer of political conflict, he shows us how intense personal lives and passionate political participation connect with each other. Auyero tells stories of Argentinian political and economic crises from an entirely fresh perspective.rdquo;mdash;Viviana Zelizer, Princeton University\tJavier Auyero is Assistant Professor of Sociology at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. "text": "Treasure Island.\nClimb aboard for the swashbuckling adventure of a lifetime. Treasure Islandhas enthralled (and caused slight seasickness) for decades. The names Long John Silver and Jim Hawkins are destined to remain pieces of folklore for as long as children want to read Robert Louis Stevenson's most famous book. With it's dastardly plot and motley crew of rogues and villains, it seems unlikely that children will ever say no to this timeless classic. --Naomi Gesinger \t --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.\tGr 7 Up-The archetypal sea-faring adventure story is given another rousing and dramatic rendition in this quickly paced abridged entry in Hodder's top-flight Classic Collection series. The critical plot and subplot threads have been beautifully retained, and all the classic lines like \"shiver me timbers\" have been included. Stalwart English actor Richard Griffiths handles the bulk of the narrative chores flawlessly and is particularly effective in his pacing. He is capably assisted by Gareth Armstrong who, inexplicably, is uncredited on the cassette case. The subtle use of occasional sound effects such as gulls, lapping waves, and cannon and gunshot enhances this superb version of Stevenson's masterpiece. All collections should make room for this fine work.Barry X. Miller, Austin Public Library, TXCopyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.\t --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.\tGr. 5-9. This is one of the best in the picture-book-size Scribner Storybook Classic series. True to the spirit of Stevenson's timeless novel, Timothy Meis' abridged retelling captures the bloody action of mutiny on the high seas and the cutthroat quest for hidden treasure. The story is told through the eyes of brave cabin boy Jim, who fights off the murderous pirates and bonds with their one-legged leader, Long John Silver. Wyeth's thrilling, handsomely reproduced paintings, originally done in 1911, will attract a variety of readers, including some older high-schoolers. In dark shades of brown and red, the pictures focus on the grim, exciting struggle on board the ship and on the island. At the same time, there's a burning golden glow in the background of almost every scene, keeping readers in mind of the treasure that drives the wild action. The most unforgettable painting--and one of Wyeth's most famous--is the melancholy scene of Jim leaving home as his mother weeps in the background. It's the elemental adventure. Crossing the Atlantic in search of the buried cache, Jim and the ship's crew must brave the elements and a mutinous charge led by the quintessentially ruthless pirate Long John Silver. Brilliantly conceived and splendidly executed, it is a novel that has seized the imagination of generations of adults and children alike. And as David Cordingly points out in his Introduction, Treasure Island is also the best and most influential of all the stories about pirates. From the Trade Paperback edition.\t --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.\tThe adventure story told in Treasure Island has become a part of popular folklore. John Sutherland discusses the novels place in Stevenson's biography and oeuvre in his learned and lively critical introduction to this new edition. Exploring the novel's genesis in Stevenson's \"plundering\" of other writers, his writer's block, and the surprisingly disturbing and complex nature of what was meant to be a children's story, Sutherland argues for the enduring vitality and appeal of Stevenson's first novel. Appendices include Stevenson's writing about the novel, contemporary reviews, and sources on which Stevenson drew (or from which he borrowed) when writing Treasure Island.\t --This text refers to the \t\t\t\t\t\t\tPaperback\t edition.\tRobert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894) was born in Edinburgh. In the brief span of forty-four years, dogged by poor health, he made an enormous contribution to English literature with his novels, poetry, and essays. The son of upper-middle-class parents, he was the victim of lung trouble from birth, and spent a sheltered childhood surrounded by constant care. The balance of his life was taken up with his unremitting devotion to work, and a search for a cure to his illness that took him all over the world. His travel essays were publihsed widely, and his short fiction was gathered in many volumes. His first full-length work of fiction, Treasure Island, was published in 1883 and brought him great fame, which only increased with the publication of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1886). He followed with the Scottish romances Kidnapped (1886) and The Master of Ballantrae (1889). In 1888 he set out with his family for the South Seas, traveling to the leper colony at Molokai, and finally settling in Samoa, where he died.\t --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.\tChapter IThe Old Sea Dog at the Admiral BenbowSquire Trelawney, Dr. Livesey, and the rest of these gentlemen having asked me to write down the whole particulars about Treasure Island, from the beginning to the end, keeping nothing back but the bearings of the island, and that only because there is still treasure not yet lifted, I take up my pen in the year of grace 17-, and go back to the time when my father kept the Admiral Benbow inn, and the brown old seaman, with the sabre cut, first took up his lodging under our roof.I remember him as if it were yesterday, as he came plodding to the inn door, his sea-chest following behind him in a hand-barrow; a tall, strong, heavy, nut-brown man; his tarry pigtail falling over the shoulders of his soiled blue coat; his hands ragged and scarred, with black, broken nails; and the sabre cut across one cheek, a dirty, livid white. I remember him looking round the cove and whistling to himself as he did so, and then breaking out in that old sea-song that he sang so often afterwards:-Fifteen men on the dead man's chest-Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!in the high, old tottering voice that seemed to have been tuned and broken at the capstan bars. Then he rapped on the door with a bit of stick like a handspike that he carried, and when my father appeared, called roughly for a glass of rum. This, when it was brought to him, he drank slowly, like a connoisseur, lingering on the taste, and still looking about him at the cliffs and up at our signboard. This is a handy cove, says he, at length; and a pleasant sittyated grog-shop. Much company, mate?My father told him no, very little company, the more was the pity.Well, then, said he, this is the berth for me. Here you, matey, he cried to the man who trundled the barrow; bring up alongside and help up my chest. I'll stay here a bit, he continued. I'm a plain man; rum and bacon and eggs is what I want, and that head up there for to watch ships off. What you mought call me? You mought call me captain. Oh, I see what you're at-there; and he threw down three or four gold pieces on the threshold. You can tell me when I've worked through that, says he, looking as fierce as a commander. And, indeed, bad as his clothes were, and coarsely as he spoke, he had none of the appearance of a man who sailed before the mast; but seemed like a mate or skipper, accustomed to be obeyed or to strike. The man who came with the barrow told us the mail had set him down the morning before at the Royal George; that he had inquired what inns there were along the coast, and hearing ours well spoken of, I suppose, and described as lonely, had chosen it from the others for his place of residence. And that was all we could learn of our guest. He was a very silent man by custom. All day he hung round the cove, or upon the cliffs, with a brass telescope; all evening he sat in a corner of the parlour next the fire, and drank rum and water very strong. Mostly he would not speak when spoken to; only look up sudden and fierce, and blow through his nose like a fog-horn; and we and the people who came about our house soon learned to let him be. Every day, when he came back from his stroll, he would ask if any seafaring men had gone by along the road? At first we thought it was the want of company of his own kind that made him ask this question; but at last we began to see he was desirous to avoid them. When a seaman put up at the Admiral Benbow (as now and then some did, making by the coast road for Bristol), he would look in at him through the curtained door before he entered the parlour; and he was always sure to be as silent as a mouse when any such was present. For me, at least, there was no secret about the matter; for I was, in a way, a sharer in his alarms. He had taken me aside one day, and promised me a silver fourpenny on the first of every month if I would only keep my weather-eye open for a seafaring man with one leg, and let him know the moment he appeared. Often enough, when the first of the month came round, and I applied to him for my wage, he would only blow through his nose at me, and stare me down; but before the week was out he was sure to think better of it, bring me my fourpenny piece, and repeat his orders to look out for the seafaring man with one leg.How that personage haunted my dreams, I need scarcely tell you. On stormy nights, when the wind shook the four corners of the house, and the surf roared along the cove and up the cliffs, I would see him in a thousand forms, and with a thousand diabolical expressions. Now the leg would be cut off at the knee, now at the hip; now he was a monstrous kind of a creature who had never had but the one leg, and that in the middle of his body. To see him leap and run and pursue me over hedge and ditch was the worst of nightmares. And altogether I paid pretty dear for my monthly fourpenny piece, in the shape of these abominable fancies. But though I was so terrified by the idea of the seafaring man with one leg, I was far less afraid of the captain himself than anybody else who knew him. There were nights when he took a deal more rum and water than his head would carry; and then he would sometimes sit and sing his wicked, old, wild sea-songs, minding nobody; but sometimes he would call for glasses round, and force all the trembling company to listen to his stories or bear a chorus to his singing. Often I have heard the house shaking with Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum; all the neighbours joining in for dear life, with the fear of death upon them, and each singing louder than the other, to avoid remark. For in these fits he was the most over-riding companion ever known; he would slap his hand on the table for silence all round; he would fly up in a passion of anger at a question, or sometimes because none was put, and so he judged the company was not following his story. Nor would he allow any one to leave the inn till he had drunk himself sleepy and reeled off to bed.His stories were what frightened people worst of all. Dreadful stories they were; about hanging, and walking the plank, and storms at sea, and the Dry Tortugas, and wild deeds and places on the Spanish Main. By his own account he must have lived his life among some of the wickedest men that God ever allowed upon the sea; and the language in which he told these stories shocked our plain country people almost as much as the crimes that he described. My father was always saying the inn would be ruined, for people would soon cease coming there to be tyrannised over and put down, and sent shivering to their beds; but I really believe his presence did us good. People were frightened at the time, but on looking back they rather liked it; it was a fine excitement in a quiet country life; and there was even a party of the younger men who pretended to admire him, calling him a true sea-dog, and a real old salt, and such like names, and saying there was the sort of man that made England terrible at sea.In one way, indeed, he bade fair to ruin us; for he kept on staying week after week, and at last month after month, so that all the money had been long exhausted, and still my father never plucked up the heart to insist on having more. If ever he mentioned it, the captain blew through his nose so loudly, that you might say he roared, and stared my poor father out of the room. I have seen him wringing his hands after such a rebuff, and I am sure the annoyance and the terror he lived in must have greatly hastened his early and unhappy death. All the time he lived with us the captain made no change whatever in his dress but to buy some stockings from a hawker. One of the cocks of his hat having fallen down, he let it hang from that day forth, though it was a great annoyance when it blew. I remember the appearance of his coat, which he patched himself up-stairs in his room, and which, before the end, was nothing but patches. He never wrote or received a letter, and he never spoke with any but the neighbours, and with these, for the most part, only when drunk on rum. The great sea-chest none of us had ever seen open.He was only once crossed, and that was towards the end, when my poor father was far gone in a decline that took him off. Dr. Livesey came late one afternoon to see the patient, took a bit of dinner from my mother, and went into the parlour to smoke a pipe until his horse should come down from the hamlet, for we had no stabling at the old Benbow. I followed him in, and I remember observing the contrast the neat, bright doctor, with his powder as white as snow, and his bright, black eyes and pleasant manners, made with the coltish country folk, and above all, with that filthy, heavy, bleared scarecrow of a pirate of ours, sitting far gone in rum, with his arms on the table. Suddenly he-the captain, that is-began to pipe up his eternal song:-Fifteen men on the dead man's chest-Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!Drink and the devil had done for the rest-Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!At first I had supposed the dead man's chest to be that identical big box of his up-stairs in the front room, and the thought had been mingled in my nightmares with that of the one-legged seafaring man. But by this time we had all long ceased to pay any particular notice to the song; it was new, that night, to nobody but Dr. Livesey, and on him I observed it did not produce an agreeable effect, for he looked up for a moment quite angrily before he went on with his talk to old Taylor, the gardener, on a new cure for the rheumatics. In the meantime, the captain gradually brightened up at his own music, and at last flapped his hand upon the table before him in a way we all knew to mean-silence. The voices stopped at once, all but Dr. Livesey's; he went on as before, speaking clear and kind, and drawing briskly at hi...\t --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.\tJim Hawkins, son of the proprietor of the Admiral Benbow Inn,is fascinated by a mysterious seaman who takes up lodging.
