- On Enumerating Higher Bruhat Orders Through Deletion and Contraction The higher Bruhat orders B(n,k) were introduced by Manin-Schechtman to study discriminantal hyperplane arrangements and subsequently studied by Ziegler, who connected B(n,k) to oriented matroids. In this paper, we consider the enumeration of B(n,k) and improve upon Balko's asymptotic lower and upper bounds on |B(n,k)| by a factor exponential in k. A proof of Ziegler's formula for |B(n,n-3)| is given and a bijection between a certain subset of B(n,n-4) and totally symmetric plane partitions is proved. Central to our proofs are deletion and contraction operations for the higher Bruhat orders, defined in analogy with matroids. Dual higher Bruhat orders are also introduced, and we construct isomorphisms relating the higher Bruhat orders and their duals. - Forget Unlearning: Towards True Data-Deletion in Machine Learning Unlearning algorithms aim to remove deleted data's influence from trained models at a cost lower than full retraining. However, prior guarantees of unlearning in literature are flawed and don't protect the privacy of deleted records. We show that when users delete their data as a function of published models, records in a database become interdependent. So, even retraining a fresh model after deletion of a record doesn't ensure its privacy. Secondly, unlearning algorithms that cache partial computations to speed up the processing can leak deleted information over a series of releases, violating the privacy of deleted records in the long run. To address these, we propose a sound deletion guarantee and show that the privacy of existing records is necessary for the privacy of deleted records. Under this notion, we propose an accurate, computationally efficient, and secure machine unlearning algorithm based on noisy gradient descent. 2 authors · Oct 17, 2022
- Adverb Is the Key: Simple Text Data Augmentation with Adverb Deletion In the field of text data augmentation, rule-based methods are widely adopted for real-world applications owing to their cost-efficiency. However, conventional rule-based approaches suffer from the possibility of losing the original semantics of the given text. We propose a novel text data augmentation strategy that avoids such phenomena through a straightforward deletion of adverbs, which play a subsidiary role in the sentence. Our comprehensive experiments demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of our proposed approach for not just single text classification, but also natural language inference that requires semantic preservation. - PoliTok-DE: A Multimodal Dataset of Political TikToks and Deletions From Germany We present PoliTok-DE, a large-scale multimodal dataset (video, audio, images, text) of TikTok posts related to the 2024 Saxony state election in Germany. The corpus contains over 195,000 posts published between 01.07.2024 and 30.11.2024, of which over 18,000 (17.3%) were subsequently deleted from the platform. Posts were identified via the TikTok research API and complemented with web scraping to retrieve full multimodal media and metadata. PoliTok-DE supports computational social science across substantive and methodological agendas: substantive work on intolerance and political communication; methodological work on platform policies around deleted content and qualitative-quantitative multimodal research. To illustrate one possible analysis, we report a case study on the co-occurrence of intolerance and entertainment using an annotated subset. The dataset of post IDs is publicly available on Hugging Face, and full content can be hydrated with our provided code.
