Includes various modern concepts, techniques, and tools for analyzing and designing well-structured software systems. The course presents an overview of the system development life cycle for computer programmers and systems analysts from problem-solving perspective. Course emphasis will be on the strategies of system analysis and design for producing logical methodologies for dealing with complexity in the development of information systems.
Learning Outcomes NDSU College of Business Learning Goals:
1. Our students will be effective communicators
2. Our students will demonstrate effective critical thinking and decision making
3. Our students will be knowledgeable about key business domains
4. Our students will show sensitivity to ethics/ethical reasoning
5. Our students will be effective collaborators
6. Our students will be sensitive to issues of globalization
Learning Outcomes (Cont’d) MIS 315 contributes to these goals through its student learning outcomes:
1. Understand the systems development life cycle and various strategies to develop an information system,
2. Understand the responsibilities of the system analyst,
3. Understand various aspects of a feasibility analysis,
4. Identify system scope, business goals, and system requirements,
5. Use diagramming tools (e.g., MS Visio) to create UML models,
6. Use a project management tool (e.g., MS Project) to create a project schedule,
7. Design a small information system based on object-oriented approach, and
8. Understand the issues of user interface design.
Course Expectations System analysis and design ideas and strategies are necessary components in understanding information systems. Hence, the approach will be to learn how to build a system from the “ground up” and how systems impact and/or are used to support the business function within an enterprise. The topics covered in this course are difficult to master without considerable effort.
Since there is a combination of hands-on assignments and conceptual material you will need to develop a diverse set of skills to be successful. Further, you will need to put forth considerable effort and time for experimenting and practicing the technical components of the course. You should make every effort to keep up on the assigned material in the textbook and complete the assignments by the specified due dates.
New concepts build on earlier concepts. Attendance in all class periods is expected. If a student must miss a class, he/she is responsible for getting a copy of the notes and/or assignment from his/her classmates or the class Blackboard site.
In addition, Systems Analysis and Design is a rapidly changing field. As computing professionals you will have to learn stay current. You will have to learn what to read and where to find what it is you should be reading.
Required Technology Microsoft Visio and Microsoft Project. Grades will be based on the following scale:

Points
Quizzes 40
In-Class Questions 10
Project/Assignments 200
Tests (5 × 25pt each) 125
Total 375

Grades Percentage Points
A 90-100% 337-375
B 80-89.9% 300-336
C 70-79.9% 262-299
D 60-69.9% 225-261
F < 60% < 225

Quizzes There will be 12 quizzes given out throughout the semester. No make-up quiz will be given but only the top 10 quiz scores will count towards your course grade.
In-Class Questions Each student will be randomly called on to answer in-class questions. There are two questions throughout the semester (5 pt. each). You must attend class to get your name on the student list to have a chance to be called on. If you cannot make it to the class, you need to let the instructor know by email in advance (at least 30 minutes before class), so that your name will be taken off the student list. If you are called on but are not present in class, you will receive a grade of zero for each in-class question.
Group Project /
Assignments Each student will participate in a group project. Each project includes small/single topic assignments. Each assignment is an extension into the detail of what is being discussed in class. The project will require that you get out of the textbooks and into modeling open-ended information systems. Details of the assignments will be given later in class and/or on Blackboard. If you miss class, it is your responsibility to check Blackboard for any given assignments and to get a copy of the notes from your classmates.
Assignments are due on assigned dates. Late submissions are not accepted. Missing assignments will received a grade of zero.
Tests
There are five online, open-book tests in this class. You need to work on the tests independently. Consultation with any other person except the instructor regarding the tests is NOT allowed. Each test contains questions from the assigned readings, assignments, and material and concepts presented and discussed in class. Failure to take a test on the scheduled date and scheduled time will result in a score of zero. Make-up tests will be allowed only in extreme and unusual circumstances with proofs. If it is not possible for you to be present for a test, you must contact me in advance to arrange for a make-up which may be harder than the scheduled test.
Extra-credit Student can earn up to a total of 15 extra credit points for attending professional development events. Additional details will be provided in class.
Laptop Policy It is expected that each student will have their own laptop with the required software configuration installed. If this will be a problem the student should contact the instructor as soon as possible.
Other Policies 1. Do NOT use cell phones or text messaging in class. All ringers must be turned off.

MIS 340 contributes to these goals through its student learning outcomes:
* Students will learn conceptual frameworks to understand the use of BI/DA in organizational decision-making settings.
* Students will learn how to design data warehouses and data marts and use the extract, transform, load (ETL) process to populate the data warehouse with data from organizational transaction processing systems.
* Students will be able to define data mining and understand the different methodologies associated with data mining.
* Students will learn advanced software application hands-on skills on how to apply leading analytics tools (e.g., Teradata, Power Pivot, Tableau) to develop BI solutions.

Course Administration
This course is offered in a blended format with approximately 50% lecture sessions and 50% online offerings (see class schedule for details.) During both lecture and online sessions, a number of quizzes, video tutorials, hands-on exercises, reading assignment, and other activities will be given to improve the understanding of course material and encourage attendance.

Assignments
All assignments and projects are due at the time and date specified in the instructions. 10% of the total possible points will be deducted each day for late submissions. Late submissions beyond 5 days (including weekends) will not be accepted.

Attendance & Class Activities
To improve the understanding of course material and encourage class attendance, a number of class exercises, reading assignments, quizzes, and online activities will be given during the semester. There is no late submission or make-up for missed class activities except for excused absences supported by documentation.

You are a critical element in class sessions, which will usually be interactive. All students are encouraged to ask questions to clarify and expand the presented material. Each class will have important information, and it is your responsibility to get this information if you are unable to attend the class. There will be online videos materials and hands-on practice designed to supplement the textbooks.

Exams
The exams will cover all the topics that are covered in the class. Each exam may consist of two parts: (1) a closed-book online test and (2) a take-home software project. There will be no make-up exams, except for emergency situations or medical reasons supported by medical or other appropriate documentation.
