"The words of Neĥemya the son of Ḥakhalya. And it came to pass in the month Kislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the capital,", |
"that Ḥanani, one of my brothers, came, he and certain men of Yehuda; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who were left of the captivity, and concerning Yerushalayim.", |
"And they said to me, The remnant who are left of the captivity there in the province suffer much hardship and insult: and the wall of Yerushalayim is broken down, and its gates are burned with fire.", |
"And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and I fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,", |
"and said, I pray thee, O Lord God of heaven, the great and terrible God, who keeps covenant and troth to those who love him and observe his commandments:", |
"let Thy ear now be attentive, and Thy eyes open, that Thou mayst hear the prayer of Thy servant, which I pray before Thee now day and night, for the children of Yisra᾽el Thy servants, and I will confess the sins of the children of Yisra᾽el which we have sinned against Thee: both I and my father’s house have sinned.", |
"We have dealt very corruptly against Thee, and have not kept the commandments, or the statutes, or the judgments, which Thou didst command Thy servant Moshe.", |
"Remember, I pray Thee, the word that Thou didst command Thy servant Moshe, saying, If you transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations:", |
"but if you turn to me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though your outcasts be at the utmost parts of heaven, from there will I gather them, and I will bring them to the place which I have chosen to set my name there.", |
"Now these are Thy servants and Thy people, whom Thou hast redeemed by Thy great power, and by Thy strong hand.", |
"O Lord, I pray Thee, let now Thy ear be attentive to the prayer of Thy servant, and to the prayer of Thy servants, who delight to fear Thy name: and prosper, I pray Thee, Thy servant this day, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man. For I was the king’s cupbearer." |

"And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaĥshasta the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it to the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence.", |
"Wherefore the king said to me, Why is thy face sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very much afraid,", |
"and I said to the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my face be sad, when the city, the place of the tombs of my ancestors lies waste, and its gates are consumed with fire?", |
"Then the king said to me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven.", |
"And I said to the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight that thou wouldst send me to Yehuda, to the city of the graves of my ancestors, that I may rebuild it.", |
"And the king said to me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time.", |
"Moreover I said to the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may let me pass through until I come into Yehuda;", |
"and a letter to Asaf the keeper of the king’s forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the fortress of the temple, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me.", |
"Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king’s letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me.", |
"When Sanvallat the Ḥoronite, and Toviyya the servant, the ῾Ammonite, heard of it, it displeased them greatly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Yisra᾽el.", |
"So I came to Yerushalayim, and was there three days.", |
"And I arose in the night, I and some few men with me; and I told no one what my God had put in my heart to do at Yerushalayim: nor was there any beast with me, save the beast that I rode upon.", |
"And I went out by night by the gate of the valley, even before the dragon’s well, and to the dung gate, and viewed the walls of Yerushalayim, which were broken down, and its gates which had been destroyed by fire.", |
"Then I went on to the fountain gate and to the king’s pool: but there was no place for the beast that was under me to pass.", |
"Then I went up in the night by the wadi, and viewed the wall, and turned back, and entered by the gate of the valley, and so returned.", |
"And the rulers knew not where I had gone or what I had done; nor had I as yet told it to the Jews, or to the priests, or to the nobles, or to the rulers, or to the rest who did the work.", |
"Then said I to them, You see the distress that we are in, how Yerushalayim lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire: come and let us build up the wall of Yerushalayim, so that we no longer suffer insult.", |
"Then I told them of the hand of my God which was good upon me; as also the king’s words that had spoken to me. And they said, Let us rise up and build. So they strengthened their hands for this good work.", |
"But when Sanvallat the Ḥoronite, and Toviyya the servant, the ῾Ammonite, and Geshem the ῾Arvian heard it, they laughed us to scorn, and despised us, and said, What is this thing that you do? will you rebel against the king?", |
"Then I answered them, and said to them, The God of heaven, he will prosper us; therefore we his servants will arise and build: but you have no portion, or right, or memorial, in Yerushalayim." |
], |
[ |
"Then Elyashiv the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they built the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up its doors; even to the tower of the hundred they sanctified it, as far as the tower of Ḥanan᾽el.", |
"And next to him the men of Yereĥo built. And next to them Zakkur the son of Imri built.", |
"But the fish gate did the sons of Sena᾽a build; they also laid its beams, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.", |
"And next to them Meremot the son of Uriyya, the son of Qoż repaired. And next to them Meshullam the son of Berekhya the son of Meshezav᾽el repaired. And next to them Żadoq the son of Ba῾ana repaired.", |
"And next to them the Teqo῾ites repaired; but their nobles did not put their necks to the work of their Lord.", |
"And Yoyada the son of Paseaĥ, and Meshullam the son of Besodya repaired the old gate; they laid its beams, and set up its doors, and its bolts, and its bars.", |
"And next to them Melatya the Giv῾onite and Yadon the Meronotite, the men of Giv῾on and of Miżpa repaired, as far as the seat of the governor beyond the river.", |
"Next to him ῾Uzzi᾽el the son of Ḥarhaya of the goldsmiths repaired. And next to him Ḥananya one of the perfumers repaired; and they restored Yerushalayim unto the broad wall.", |
"And next to them Refaya the son of Ḥur, the ruler of the half district of Yerushalayim repaired.", |
"And next to them Yedaya son of Ḥarumaf repaired, even over against his house. And next to him Ḥattush the son of Ḥashavneya repaired.", |
"Malkiyya the son of Ḥarim, and Ḥashshuv the son of Paĥat-mo᾽av, repaired another section, and the furnace tower.", |
"And next to him Shallum the son of Halloĥesh, the ruler of the half district of Yerushalayim repaired, he and his daughters.", |
"The valley gate did Ḥanun, and the inhabitants of Zanoaĥ repair; they built it, and set up its doors, its bolts and its bars, and a thousand cubits on the wall as far as the dung gate.", |
"But the dung gate did Malkiyya the son of Rekhav, the ruler of part of Bet-hakkerem repair; he undertook to build it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars.", |
"But the fountain gate did Shallun the son of Kol-ĥoze, the ruler of the district of Miżpa repair; he built it, and covered it, and set up its doors, its bolts, and its bars, and the wall of the pool of Shelaĥ by the king’s garden, as far as the stairs that go down from the city of David.", |
"After him did Neĥemya the son of ῾Azbuq, the ruler of the half district of Bet-żur repair, as far as a point opposite the tombs of the house of David, as far as the man-made pool, and as far as the house of the warriors.", |
"After him the Levites repaired, Reĥum the son of Bani: next to him Ḥashavya, the ruler of the half district of Qe῾ila repaired for his area.", |
"After him their brethren, Bavvay the son of Ḥenadad, the ruler of the half district of Qe῾ila repaired.", |
"And next to him ῾Ezer the son of Yeshua, the ruler of Miżpa, repaired another section over against the ascent to the armoury at the corner.", |
"After him Barukh the son of Zakkay earnestly repaired another section, from the corner as far as the door of the house of Elyashiv the high priest.", |
"After him did Meromot the son of Uriyya the son of Qoż repair another section, from the door of the house of Elyashiv even to the end of the house of Elyashiv.", |
"And after him the priests, the men of the plain repaired.", |
"After him Binyamin and Ḥashshuv repaired opposite their house. After him ῾Azarya the son of Ma῾aseya the son of ῾Ananya repaired by his house.", |
"After him Binnuy the son of Ḥenadad repaired another section, from the house of ῾Azarya as far as the corner, and up to the turning.", |
"Palal the son of ῾Uzay, opposite the corner, and the tower which projects from the king’s high house, that was by the court of the guard. After him Pedaya the son of Par῾osh.", |
"Moreover the temple servants dwelt in the ῾Ofel, as far as a point opposite the water gate towards the east, and the projecting tower.", |
"After them the Teqo῾ites repaired another section, opposite the great projecting tower as far as the wall of the ῾Ofel.", |
"From above the horse gate the priests repaired every one over against his house.", |
"After them Żadoq the son of Immer repaired opposite his house. And after him Shema῾ya the son of Shekhanya, the keeper of the east gate, repaired.", |
"After him Ḥananya the son of Shelemya, and Ḥanun the sixth son of Żalaf repaired another section. After him Meshullam the son of Berekhya repaired opposite his chamber.", |
"After him Malkiyya one of the goldsmiths repaired as far as the house of the temple servants and of the merchants, opposite the muster gate to the corner of the battlement.", |
"And between the corner of the battlement and the sheep gate the goldsmiths and the merchants repaired.", |
"But it came to pass, that when Sanvallat heard that we were building the wall, he was angry, and greatly enraged, and he mocked the Jews.", |
"And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Shomeron, and said, What are these feeble Jews doing? will they restore things? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish seeing they are burned?", |
"Now Toviyya the ῾Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall break down their stone wall.", |
"Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their insolence upon their own head, and give them up for a prey in the land of captivity:", |
"and do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before Thee: for they have provoked Thee to anger before the builders.", |
"So we built the wall; and all the wall was joined together to half its height: for the people had a mind to work." |
], |
[ |
"But it came to pass, that when Sanvallat, and Toviyya, and the ῾Arvians, and the ῾Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Yerushalayim were being repaired, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very angry,", |
"and they conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Yerushalayim, and to cause confusion in it.", |
"Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them.", |
"And Yehuda said, The strength of the bearers of burdens is failing, and there is much rubbish; so that we are not able to build the wall.", |
"And our adversaries said, They shall neither know, nor see, until we come in the midst among them, and slay them, and cause the work to cease.", |
"And it came to pass, that when the Jews who dwelt by them came, they said to us ten times, From all places where you shall return, they will be upon us.", |
"Therefore in the lower places behind the wall on the bare face of the rock, I stationed the people; I stationed them according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows.", |
"And I looked, and rose up, and said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not afraid of them: remember the Lord, who is great and awe inspiring, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.", |
"And it came to pass, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and God had brought their counsel to nought, that we returned all of us to the wall, everyone to his work.", |
"And it came to pass from that time onwards, that the half of my servants did the work, and the other half of them held the spears, the shields, and the bows, and the coats of mail; and the rulers were behind all the house of Yehuda.", |
"They who built the wall, and they who bore burdens, loaded themselves in such a way that with one of his hands each laboured in the work, and with the other hand he held a weapon.", |
"For the builders, everyone had his sword girded by his side, and so he built. And he who sounded the shofar was by me.", |
"And I said to the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, The work is great and large, and we are separated upon the wall, far from one another.", |
"In whatever place you hear the sound of the shofar, rally to us there: our God shall fight for us.", |
"So we laboured in the work: and half of them held the spears from the rising of the morning till the stars appeared.", |
"Likewise at the same time I said to the people, Let everyone with his servant lodge within Yerushalayim, so that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour in the day.", |
"So neither I, nor my brethren, nor my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us put off our clothes: everyone brought his weapon with him, even to the water." |
], |
[ |
"And there was a great cry of the people and of their wives against their brethren the Jews.", |
"For there were those who said, We, our sons, and our daughters, are many: therefore let us get corn, that we may eat, and live.", |
"Some also there were who said, We have mortgaged our lands, our vineyards, and our houses, that we might buy corn, because of the dearth.", |
"There were also those who said, We have borrowed money for the king’s tribute, and that upon our lands and vineyards.", |
"Yet now our flesh is as good as the flesh of our brethren, our children as good as their children: and, lo, we press our sons and our daughters into slavery, and some of our daughters are pressed into slavery already: nor is it in our power to redeem them; for other men have our lands and vineyards.", |
"And I was very angry when I heard their cry and these words.", |
"Then I took counsel with myself, and I rebuked the nobles, and the rulers, and said to them, You make claims for debt, everyone of his brother! And I held a great assembly against them.", |
"And I said to them, We after our ability have redeemed our brethren the Jews, who were sold to the heathen; and will you nevertheless sell your brethren? or shall they be sold to us? Then they held their peace, and found nothing to answer.", |
"Also I said, That which you do is not good: ought you not to walk in the fear of our God because of the insult of the heathen our enemies?", |
"I likewise, and my brethren, and my servants, have lent them money and corn: I pray you, let us release this debt.", |
"Restore, I pray you, to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their oliveyards, and their houses, also the percentage of the money, and of the corn, the wine, and the oil, that you exact of them.", |
"Then they said, We will restore them, and will require nothing of them; so will we do as thou sayst. Then I called the priests, and took an oath of them, that they should do according to this promise.", |
"Also I shook out my lap, and said, So God shake out every man from his house, and from his labour, who does not perform this promise, even thus may he be shaken out, and emptied. And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the Lord. And the people did according to this promise.", |
"Moreover from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Yehuda, from the twentieth year even to the thirty second year of Artaĥshasta the king, that is, twelve years, I and my brethren have not eaten the bread of the governor.", |
"But the former governors who had been before me laid burdens upon the people, and had taken of them for bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver; even their servants bore rule over the people: but I did not do so, because of the fear of God.", |
"For I also continued in the work of this wall, nor did we buy any land: and all my servants were gathered there to the work.", |
"Moreover there were at my table a hundred and fifty of the Jews and the rulers, besides those who came to us from among the nations who were round about us.", |
"Now that which was prepared for one day was one ox and six choice sheep; also fowls were prepared for me, and once in ten days store of all sorts of wine: yet for all this I did not demand the bread of the governor, because the bondage was heavy upon this people.", |
"Remember me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people." |
], |
[ |
"Now it came to pass, when Sanvallat, and Toviyya, and Geshem the ῾Arvian, and the rest of our enemies, heard that I had built the wall, and that there was no breach left in it; (though at that time I had not set up the doors upon the gates;)", |
"then Sanvallat and Geshem sent to me, saying, Come, let us meet together in one of the villages in the plain of Ono. But they thought to do me mischief.", |
"And I sent messengers to them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?", |
"So they sent to me four times after this sort; and I answered them after the same manner.", |
"Then Sanvallat sent his servant to me in like manner the fifth time with an open letter in his hand:", |
"in which was written, It is reported among the nations, and Gashmu says it, that thou and the Jews think to rebel: for which cause thou didst build the wall, that thou mayst be their king, according to these words.", |
"And thou hast also appointed prophets to proclaim of these at Yerushalayim, saying, There is a king in Yehuda: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.", |
"Then I sent to him, saying, There are no such things done as thou sayst, but thou dost invent them out of thy own heart.", |
"For they all would have us afraid, saying, Their hands shall be weakened from the work, that it shall not be done. (Now therefore, strengthen my hands.)", |
"Afterwards I came to the house of Shema῾ya the son of Delaya the son of Mehetav᾽el, who was shut up; and he said, Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us shut the doors of the temple: for they will come to slay thee; yea, in the night they will come to slay thee.", |
"And I said, Should such a man as I flee? and who such as I could go into the temple and live? I will not go in.", |
"And, lo, I perceived that God had not sent him; but that he pronounced this prophecy against me: for Toviyya and Sanvallat had hired him.", |
"For this cause was he hired, that I should be afraid, and do so, and sin, and that they might have matter for an evil report, that they might taunt me.", |
"My God, remember Toviyya and Sanvallat according to these their works, and also the prophetess No῾adya, and the rest of the prophets, who would have put me in fear.", |
"So the wall was finished in the twenty fifth day of the month Elul, in fifty two days.", |
"And it came to pass, that when all our enemies heard that, all the nations that were about us were afraid and were much cast down in their own eyes: for they perceived that this work was done by our God.", |
"Moreover in those days the nobles of Yehuda sent many letters to Toviyya, and the letters of Toviyya came to them.", |
"For there were many in Yehuda sworn to him, because he was the son in law of Shekhanya the son of Araĥ; and his son Yehoĥanan had taken the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berekhya.", |
"Also they spoke of his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. And Toviyya sent letters to put me in fear." |
], |
[ |
"Now it came to pass, when the wall was built, and I had set up the doors, and the gatekeepers and the singers and the Levites were appointed,", |
"that I gave my brother Ḥanani, and Ḥananya the ruler of the palace, charge over Yerushalayim: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many.", |
"And I said to them, Let not the gates of Yerushalayim be opened until the sun is hot; and while people are still standing there, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches among the inhabitants of Yerushalayim everyone in his watch, and everyone to be over against his house.", |
"Now the city was large and great: but the people in it were few, and the houses were not yet built.", |
"And my God put into my heart to gather together the nobles, and the rulers, and the people, that they might be reckoned by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of those who came up at the first, and found written there.", |
"These are the children of the province, who went up out of the captivity, of the exile, whom Nevukhadneżżar the king of Bavel had carried away, and came back to Yerushalayim and to Yehuda, everyone to his city,", |
"who came with Zerubbavel, Yeshua, Neĥemya, ῾Azarya, Ra῾amya, Naĥamani, Mordekhay, Bilshan, Misperet, Bigvay, Neĥum, Ba῾ana. The number of the men of the people of Yisra᾽el:", |

"And they kept the service of their God, and the service of the purification, as did the singers and the gatekeepers, according to the commandment of David, and of Shelomo his son.", |
"For in the days of David and Asaf of old there were chiefs of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving to God.", |
"And all Yisra᾽el in the days of Zerubbavel, and in the days of Neĥemya, gave the portions of the singers and the gatekeepers, as every day required: and they gave the holy portions to the Levites; and the Levites gave the holy portions to the children of Aharon." |

"On that day they read in the book of Moshe in the hearing of the people; and therein was found written, that the ῾Ammonite and the Mo᾽avite should not come into the congregation of God forever;", |
"because they did not meet the children of Yisra᾽el with bread and with water, but hired Bil῾am against them, that he should curse them: but our God turned the curse into a blessing.", |
"Now it came to pass, when they had heard that Tora, that they separated from Yisra᾽el all the mixed multitude.", |
"And before this, Elyashiv the priest, having the oversight of the chamber of the house of our God; being allied to Toviyya,", |
"prepared for him a great chamber, where they had previously put the meal offerings, the frankincense, and the vessels, and the tithes of the corn, the new wine, and the oil, which were given by commandment to the Levites, and the singers, and the gatekeepers; and the heave offerings of the priests.", |
"But in all this time I was not at Yerushalayim: for in the thirty second year of Artaĥshasta king of Bavel, I came to the king, and after certain days I obtained leave of the king:", |
"and I came to Yerushalayim, and understood of the evil that Elyashiv did for Toviyya, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.", |
"And it vexed me very much: so I cast all the household articles of Toviyya out of the chamber.", |
"Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and I brought back there the vessels of the house of God, with the meal offerings and the frankincense.", |
"And I perceived that the portions of the Levites had not been given them: for the Levites and the singers, who did the work, were fled everyone to his field.", |
"Then I contended with the rulers, and said, Why is the house of God forsaken? And I gathered them together, and set them in their place.", |
"Then all Yehuda brought the tithe of the corn and the new wine and the oil to the treasuries.", |
"And I made treasurers over the treasuries, Shelemya the priest, and Żadoq the scribe, and of the Levites Pedaya: and next to them was Ḥanan the son of Zakkur, the son of Mattanya: for they were counted faithful, and their office was to distribute to their brethren.", |
"Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its service.", |
"In those days I saw in Yehuda some treading winepresses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves of corn, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Yerushalayim on the sabbath day: and I forewarned them on the day on which they sold food.", |
"There dwelt men of Żor there also, who brought fish, and all manner of ware, and sold on the sabbath to the children of Yehuda, and in Yerushalayim.", |
"Then I contended with the nobles of Yehuda, and said to them, What evil thing is this that you do, and profane the sabbath day?", |
"Did not your father do thus, and did not our God bring all this evil upon us, and upon this city? and yet you bring more wrath upon Yisra᾽el by profaning the sabbath.", |
"And it came to pass, that when the gates of Yerushalayim began to be dark before the sabbath, I commanded that the gates should be shut, and charged that they should not be opened till after the sabbath: and I set some of my servants at the gates, so that no burden should be brought in on the sabbath day.", |
"So the merchants and sellers of all kinds of ware lodged outside Yerushalayim once or twice.", |
"Then I forewarned them, and said to them, Why do you lodge about the wall? if you do so again, I will lay hands on you. From that time on, they came no more on the sabbath.", |
"And I commanded the Levites, that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should come and guard the gates, to keep the sabbath day holy. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to Thy abundant love.", |
"In those days also I saw Jews who had married wives of Ashdod, of ῾Ammon, and of Mo᾽av:", |
"and their children spoke half in the speech of Ashdod, and could not speak in the language of Yehuda, but according to the language of various other peoples.", |
"And I contended with them, and cursed them, and beat some of them, and pulled out their hair, and made them take oath by God, saying, You shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor take their daughters to your sons, or for yourselves.", |
"Did not Shelomo king of Yisra᾽el sin by these things? and even though among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God made him king over all Yisra᾽el: nevertheless the foreign women caused even him to sin.", |
"Shall we then hearken to you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying foreign wives?", |
"And one of the sons of Yoyada, the son of Elyashiv the high priest, was son in law to Sanvallat the Ḥoronite: therefore I chased him from me.", |
"Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.", |
"Thus I cleansed them from all foreigners, and appointed duty watches for the priests and the Levites, everyone in his business;", |
"and for the wood offering, at the times appointed, and for the firstfruits. Remember me, O my God, for good." |
