Introduction to Visuals

Introduction to Visuals

In Task 1, you may be asked to describe a graph, table, map or process diagram or two visuals. In this video, Alice will outline the different types of visuals in Task 1. This will help you read the visual effectively and write a strong response.

Discussion

How do you feel about the different types of visuals in Task 1?

What vocabulary and grammar do you think you need to use to describe them?

Which type of visual do you think is the most challenging?

Respond in the box below. Feel free to reply to other learners.

Responses

  1. Line and bar graphs, pie charts and tables are the most common types of visuals that one may be asked to describe in task 1. These visualizations are generally described in passive voice and the verb used here is a past participle. According to my knowledge the most challenging type of visualizations are the maps.

  2. Line and bar graphs, pie charts and tables are the commonest type of visuals that one may be asked to describe in task 1. The examiners are less likely to set questions on diagrams, processes, flow charts and maps. The latter kind of visuals seems to be more challenging than the former, implying that they require more preparatory work from students.
