Common Strategies for all Question Types

In the previous section, you learnt some skills and strategies to help you do better in the four different parts of the IELTS listening test. In this lesson, you will learn some common strategies you can use to answer all questions types in the test.

Common strategies

In this video, you were introduced to some strategies which you can use before and while you listen. These strategies are summarised below. 

  • Listen carefully to the spoken instructions

    • Listen for the topic of the listening passage.
    • Listen for the number of speakers.
  • Analyse the Questions

    • Read the instructions.
    • Check the number of questions.
    • Skim the title.
    • Determine the topic of the talk. 
  • Identify key words

    • Think of synonyms and antonyms.
    • Identify names of people and places. 
  • Predict possible answers

    • Try to predict logical answers. 
    • Consider grammar such as word forms.
  • Listen actively

    • Listen for key words and their synonyms.
    • Listen for signposts and use them to help you follow the ideas in the listening passages. 
    • Watch out for distractors. 
  • Record your answers as you listen

    • Note the answers are in the same order as the questions. 
    • Don’t leave questions unanswered.
