Introduction to Visuals

Introduction to Visuals

In Task 1, you may be asked to describe a graph, table, map or process diagram or two visuals. In this video, Alice will outline the different types of visuals in Task 1. This will help you read the visual effectively and write a strong response.

Discussion

How do you feel about the different types of visuals in Task 1?

What vocabulary and grammar do you think you need to use to describe them?

Which type of visual do you think is the most challenging?

Respond in the box below. Feel free to reply to other learners.

Responses

  1. I feel a bit nervous to precisely and logically summarize the content of the visuals because even I am familiar with the different types of visuals, I do not have an enough experience to interpret the information in a well organized manner. In order to describe them, I think present tense is used and vocabularies for showing facts and figures are necessary. For me, maps a challenging because I need to know certain vocabularies to describe the location and explain about the time period.

  2. All of the types of information present factual information that the examiner needs to interpret. I just need to make sure to be objective about the response that I would give. Answering a combination of two graphs is the part where I feel most challenged.

  3. The existence of different visuals makes me nervous. To use the correct vocabulary, you must understand the function of the visual given. For example, if it´s a line graph, the words related to trends should be used.
The most difficult visual to me could be multiple graphs, I imagine that, to include all the relevant information, you should identify every piece of information provided by each graph, while considering the purpose of each.
