Comparing Responses
Comparing Responses
In this part of the lesson, you will look at some extracts from candidate responses and give feedback on Lexical resource.
Model Responses
Below are two extracts from essay responses.
Read the two extracts. What feedback would you give each one for range and accuracy of vocabulary?
You can view the public band descriptors for Task 2 here.
Extract 1 (stress in the workplace)
| First of all, work today is more demanding than it used to be because of the development of science and technology. This development affects all areas of our lives, especially in the requirements of employers who are demanding greater flexibility from their employees. For instance, university graduates have to master English, computers and other skills if they want to secure decent jobs. They must continually spend more time acquiring new techniques and skills in order that they progress in the workplace. |
|
Extract 2 (fast food and health)
| However, some fast food choices can be healthy. Sushi is a sensible choice for lunch. This is because it is little in fat and sugar and usually contains vegetables and fish, such as cumcumber and tuna. In addition, sushi is not usually fried. Therefore, it is a benefit choice with many vitamins and minerals. |

Useful Tips
-
Range and Accuracy
Improve your range of vocabulary by reading about a wide range of topics in English. This will help you learn new vocabulary and will also help you to become familiar with common collocations, spelling, and word form.
-
Flexibility and Precision
In preparation for Task 2, practise reforming phrases and sentences in different ways. Being able to effectively change the sentence structure and word form will prevent too much repetition in your writing and help you to paraphrase your ideas.
-
Style
Remember that Task 2 responses require a neutral, formal style. So make sure you avoid colloquial and informal language that is used mostly in spoken English.
