RACIO

About RACIO

RACIO stands for Redundancy, Availability, Consistency, Isolation and Observability. It refers to five key aspects or principles of a database or information system.

The principles are:

  • Redundancy - Duplicate data or components are incorporated to improve reliability. For example, having backup databases or storage arrays.
  • Availability - The system is operational and functioning as required. This means preventing things like loss of network connectivity, power outages, hardware failures, software errors, etc. High availability is a key goal.
  • Consistency - The data within the system is accurate and consistent (not contradictory). Transactions must preserve the database's integrity constraints and leave the data in a consistent state.
  • Isolation - Concurrent transactions do not impact each other. Changes made by one transaction are isolated from other transactions until completed. This prevents dirty reads, non-repeatable reads and phantoms.
  • Observability - The internal state of the system can be determined through its outputs. Monitoring and logging are used to meet this principle.
